After Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, I'm sure Zelensky was trying to protect his country from further, unwarranted Russian aggression.
That is a fair point.
But you do know that the annexation of Crimea didn't just drop out of the sky?
The democratically elected President Yanukovych had been "given his marching orders", as you put it.
In a democratic society when a constitutional crisis erupts, or a loss of confidence occurs of the government, the civilised response is to hold elections and let the people decide.
That said, Ukraine being the corrupt basket-case that it is, elections may have turned into farce of claims and counterclaims of fraud.
In the West, this revolution is known affectionately as the "Euromaiden". In Putin's Russia, it is known as a coup d'état.
Decide which ever it doesn't matter, the critical point is that Putin showed what he thought of it and Annexed Crimea which had some 60% ethnic Russian population.
That doesn't justify what Putin did, but it shows where Putin stands on European integration for parts of Ukraine that are heavily populated by people identifying as Russian.
Pro-Russian separtists protests emerged in East and South where conflict has ensued ever since.
I have every sympathy for Ukrainians and wish for the peaceful restoration of their country with Putin in the Hague facing his crimes.
I do not like this Zelensky fella at all. Celebrated by Hollywood stars, photoshoots for Vogue magazine while his countrymen were sacrificing their lives, and he even offered to cede Ukraine territory (on a temporary basis, but we know in this country what that means) for NATO membership.
Zelensky is a bag-man for NATO and his decision in 2020 has brought ruin to his country.
