Key Post UK State Pension - Make voluntary contributions to qualify for UK pension on top of Irish pension

I applied in 2023

I received a letter in 2024 saying I could pay Class 2 for the missing years - paid all the years that I could - they were updated on my online record about 10 months later after 2 phone calls to HRMC

but I too have not received any further letter regarding 2024 to 2025 - am sure they are swamped after the past few years

I will also probably just make the payment to begin with and get the ball rolling

If you are buying back at class 2 ongoing each year because still employed, but then stop being an employee but continue as 'self employed' because of being an accidental landlord, does that 'self employed' piece still allow you to be on a class 2 rate, or must you be an employee for class 2? Thanks.

Thanks jfrank. That's super that class 2 can be continued even though if no longer an employee but just an accidental landlord. Accidental landlord never registers in the mind as actually being self employed so it's great that it is in fact!

Can be tricky defining Rental Income as self-employed. You would have to pay Class S PRSI on your rental income as I understand it

I wonder is that something that happens automatically when a Form 11 is returned to Revenue declaring the rental income or is it something they need to be specifically alerted to around PRSI? Sorry if this has gone off topic!

Not a practising accountant myself so, I would let somebody else on here address the nuances of Rental Income and Class S PRSI

Hi All, my last posts were back in March #1177 & #1203 when I got confirmation that I was in the system on time to qualify for the full backdated payments. I am eligible to backpay gaps from 2006.

I received a reply end September but am confused by the figures so I'm hoping somebody else has had similar and can shed light on it. I thought all along that the ideal would be to be able to backpay the voluntary contributions at the Class 2 - lower - rate, or at worst the higher Class 3 rate. I was also sure that I would be rated for C2 because I have 5 yrs on record with them. However, what I got back was a letter saying I'm only eligible at C3. That's fine and I can argue that and get it corrected over the phone as I think others have done previously.

The weird thing, though, is the letter states that the C3 rate is £3.45 and the C2 rate is £17.45... I thought it was meant to be the other way around? If I can backpay 17+ years at £3.45 then, great but... did anyone else get these numbers sent to them? Any pitfall paying at C3 rate? Thanks in advance.
Edit: just attached pics showing what I got in case anyone thinks I'm reading it wrong..

Quick update in case anyone else in same position to give ideas of time frame. Got my letter on 15 Sept advising me to pay Class 2 from 2006 to 2025. Paid 3k by revolut on 16 Sept and rang a little bit later to see if they had received it and they said give it about two months to be allocated, Kept an eye on HMRC gateway to see if Pension Forecast was updated but no movement. Rang yesterday and guy was able to confirm they had received the payment and was told me, after putting me on hold for a bit, that it was now allocated to those 19 years. I suspect he did that when I was on hold but not sure. He also said there is a big delay in getting the pension forecast and contributions updated on HMRC gateway but to check back in March and it should be there. Pretty optimistic that I have my first 19 years if not 22 for my original working spell and I just have to pay yearly now for 13 years to get full pension which is great. Again, thanks to all on here for helping with the process as it started off as a "I'll give this a go"

Thats a typo.
Really strange - you'd think that they'd all be standard template letters with the correct numbers in them, wouldn't you? I did see that link you posted too. Thought it best to see if anyone else received similar before calling them about it today. Thanks

Only if you continued working when you returned to Ireland.

Definitely appeal; I'd suggest doing it in writing & attach any supporting documentation.
Yes, it's definitely worth the effort. I know a guy who spent less time in UK back then and was still offered Class 2 repayment option. Going to call them today to see what they say before sending anything though. Thanks @DannyBoyD

Regarding those people who haven’t received letters yet, requesting payment of Voluntary NIC for ‘24-‘25, I called HMRC yesterday to enquire why I haven’t received my own letter requesting payment. I had paid 18 years voluntary NICS for 2006-2024- 18 years in total- last October ‘24 which have been added to my contribution record. I spoke to a pleasant lady at HMRC who spent 30 minutes trying to find out why the letter hasn’t been issued, especially as I opted to pay on an annual basis for future years when I filled out my CF83 form. She couldn’t really explain the reason why no letter had been issued or why it would likely not have been issued until I made contact via phone call. She advised me to fill out a new CF83 with a cover letter requesting to pay for ‘24-‘25 and receive annual letters requesting payment for future years. Sent off a new CF83 form with a cover letter this morning. Hope this is helpful to those people who are still waiting on letters that might not arrive!

Once you have approval for Class 2 you can continue to pay them, with or without that annual notice so long as you remain eligible. I would not get too hung up on not receiving the notice.... just pay them. The C2 rate for 24/25 is £179.40
