Key Post UK State Pension - Make voluntary contributions to qualify for UK pension on top of Irish pension

Apologies if this is a dumb question but I wondered if you're entitled to claim tax relief from the Irish revenue on UK NI contributions?
I'd imagine that you cannot.

Hi ,
I need some clarification please . My wife applied for a UK pension last year and got a letter today. In summary they have confirmed she has 9 qualifying years of NIC's (class 3) to date. They have provided a table of shortfalls from 2006 -2019 @ £824.2 per year ( total £10714) payable within 30 days. A second table from 2019 -2025 shows a cumulative shortfall charge of £5062 payable over the next few years. My query is how many years does she need to buyback to achieve a reasonable pension. If I pay the £10.7k shortfall this could bring her up to 23yrs of contribution and hopefully get 23/35ths of a pension !!! On the letter it states that the additional contributions may not increase her State Pension !
Any guidance available. Many Thanks

Double check the Class 3 assessment; if you think it should be Class 2 then appeal.

You need min 10 years to qualify; after that you need to do your sums.

Even at class 3, its still a good deal. If you have the money, its a good return on investment.

Log time not posting.....

Mine hasn't gone as smoothly as I hoped. Made payment back March but life (new baby + work) has meant didn't get round to double checking everything had been updated but I did call in May (I think it was May) and I was told payment fine and they would allocate it.

Turns out they didn't allocate to all the old years that I had gaps and just did it for the recent one.

Spoke to someone today that said they would sort it but....

something they said that I want to check with others is that he said that I need to make another application for years going forward after 2024 and need to do another CF83 form.

Also my online UK portal still shows class 3 rates that hopefully they will update this time.

I've been paying these voluntary payments for donkeys years & I've never been asked to complete any further forms. Nor have I come across anyone who has.

Online system takes ages before it updates, its not a priority.

This is interesting. I have had all my back payments allocated correctly but have not been billed for 24/25 as yet. I have made 3 calls to them since last May and each time they say there is a big backlog but that I should get a letter requesting payment in about 3 weeks time. The letter has never arrived. I asked could I just pay the class 2 amount similar to my other years and they said no. I applied to forward pay on my original CF83 form. Has this been an issue for anyone else?

Might you have paid 24/25 in the lump sum payment?
No I didn't pay it as part of the lump sum. I find it strange, as everyone else I know who qualified for the back payment seems to have already got the letter. I'll ring HMRC again in a month or so if I haven't heard from them. Otherwise I'll wait until April/May 26 as you suggest to see if it comes then.

I haven't received the annual letter either, didn't last year either - my only letter so far was the original acceptance letter, which was for the years up to 22/23. I was able to pay 23/24 as part of the lump sum earlier this year without issue and everything was allocated correctly, and very swiftly too. I recently found out and transferred the Class 2 amount for 24/25 although my account said "your record for this year is not available yet" - it now says it's a non-full year and gives the Class 3 figure to pay (as all the previous years did before the lump sum was applied).
My fervent hope is that my deposit for 24/25 will be eventually correctly allocated; if not done by the end of the year, I guess a call will be in order.
