So I’m getting more than double by paying the voluntary NI
Very interesting perspective and thanks for documenting it so clearly. That illustration alone should be enough to convince any class 3 doubters, especially so when you factor in index linking.

By the time you personally are drawing the pension (at age 67) the weekly benefit from one year’s NI contribution goes up from £6.89 now to nearer to £10 (assuming minimum annual uplifts of 2.5%).

Well I do wonder if it quite as clear cut as that. Perhaps it depends what age you are now.

My UK pension is 20 years away (if I get there) and I suspect that by time I get to that qualifying age of 67yrs old and 8 months I will have to wait a good while longer as the pension age will have gone up a lot further.

Also, I know UK pensioners have done well in recent years with the triple lock but that may not be the case in the future.

Then of course, there will probably be tax to be paid on the income I will be receiving from the UK.

Just thinking out loud really :) Have been paying Class 2, and I am assuming I will be transitioned over to Class 3 so might need to try and figure it out when I am asked to pay the larger amount.

Or perhaps have cleared the huge backload generated from thousands of people getting applications in at the last minute.

We are in no position to be disparaging here.
Exactly, could you imagine how the irish government services would have performed with such a large workload they can barely function as it is . The HMRC was available Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm, no irish government services are available to that extent.

I have a huge sympathy for the folk in Newcastle. They have dealt with literally millions of these applications in the past 4+ years. It is not just the odd Irishman applying, think of all the Australians, Indians etc. The scope of this exercise has been immense and I had a mental image of a dance-hall sized room stacked floor to ceiling with all these applications.

I also think they are courteous and true to their word. If they say they will respond, they will.... I have nothing but admiration for them.

Whatever about the caseworkers (good people), their postal system is a bit chaotic... routing all their international responses through distribution centres in Rotterdam or Malta or wherever. The post takes about 3+ weeks which is pretty poor in this day and age.

I wasn't intending to be disparaging but I can see how it could be interpreted that way. I had no trouble getting updated and all my interactions with HMRC have been very positive.

Good morning all.
A heads up for anyone applying for a UK pension.
Mr's Nobody was 66 at the end of October 2025.
They had no record of us applying, so we applied again, they received our application December 15th.
We heard nothing from them, so contacted them by phone on the 23/04/2026.
We were told because it was more than 4 months our case would be expedited.
And low and behold, yesterday the back pension appeared in our bank account.
Including the £10 Christmas bonus.
Happy days.

Paid 19 years in September last year and have been checking in with them regularly enough as it's not updating on the HMRC Pensions Forecast online. Spoke to someone yesterday and they said to be patient and that the team were currently working through December 2024 payments. Seems like a huge backlog and doesn't tally with some of what I'm reading here. They did confirm they have received the payment and it's in the queue to get the years allocated so I'm hoping it's ok and all I can do is keep an eye online and check in with them every month or two. The wait time on the phone seems to be only a few minutes now.
