We have an another unexpected angle to this World Cup and Ireland:
Ghana have announced their World Cup squad with St Patrick's Athletic goalkeeper Joseph Anang included in the 26-man selection.
Coach Carlos Queiroz was forced to juggle last-minute injury concerns before finalising the group.
Seems like he will be third choice keeper so unlikely to feature versus England in their group game.
He will miss some important league games but apparently clubs receive a FIFA payment of between US$12 000–$15 000 per player, per day so that will soften the blow.

1970 for me , as an 7yr old , though I didn't see many games. They played the final for us on reel-to-reel the following year when we won the local u10 league.
'74 our rented telly got repo-ed, so saw some of the games in my non-footballing friends house ......not the final though.
'78...better times and a better telly rental. I marvelled at the Scots who travelled to Argentina and vowed to go anywhere if Ireland ever qualified....
Italia 90....the dream comes true. Spent a month in Italy . Better than any TV world cup.
Republic of Ireland Women 1-0 up against The Netherlands in Cork at the half-time break. I think they're worth their lead against a lively Dutch team in pretty poor conditions (Ta siad go h-an fluichcead, mar a deartar). Looking forward to 2nd half and the lads vs Canadia in the wee small hours. I got a present of a Canadian baseball cap from family who were over there a few weeks ago, but I won't be wearing it.

I wish to add congratulations to our girls who defeated Netherlands in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night. They put in a truly inspiring performance despite being under siege for most of the game. Diving was at a minimum. There was little or no time wasting. No hysterics rolling on the ground after being tackled. The moaning to the referee by the opposition worked in favour of the Irish. We picked up a few yellow cards; who cares? And the supporters never let up shouting, screaming, egging on the team and their banners were excellent. The Irish Head Coach even handed the ball to a Dutch player for a throw-in instead of the usual dropping the ball to the ground to let it be picked up. Small thing, I know, but it just goes to say that we are a sporting nation.
One other thing of note:- The wind and rain were strong. It could not have been warm either. Some of the Irish players gave their pre match tops to the children who accompanied them onto the field in order that they would stay warm and comfortable. Also, some players presented their playing shirts to people in the crowd after the match. The match interviews were honest and not rehearsed. Well Done!

I admit to dozing off at one stage but was awake for the Ireland penalty and the rest of the game. Not the most exciting game ever but I'm delighted we came away with a draw.Canada v Ireland, might have cured insomnia
Did Canada have to get through the qualifiers or did they get a spot in the finals as hosts? They have a couple of fine young players but seem to lack the strength in depth you need to get into the World Cup Finals.

Looking at the table, only a win over group leaders France would qualify them outright for the World Cup.
Netherlands you would expect to beat winless Poland.
So a draw or loss and likely outcome is Ireland go into playoffs.
