Key Post UK State Pension - Make voluntary contributions to qualify for UK pension on top of Irish pension

The expats in the ski resorts have a good moan every year!

Good point about future. It’s an easy way to save money and also keep the money circulating in the home economy. Fuel allowances and travel subsidies are of course kept local.

Hi folks

I got my my HMRC letter setting out the amounts I need to pay - a mix of Class 2 and Class 3 contributions which ties in with my work history. However, since I submitted form CF83, I pulled a copy of my PRSI records and it turns out I actually paid PRSI during some of the years I was not in paid employment…..as a result of taxable income from rental properties during these years. I therefore believe I can appeal to have some of the Class 3 years changed to Class 2.

I only have until 5 July to “make the payment” outlined in the letter, so my question is, should I:

(a) appeal now and don’t make payment; or

(b) appeal now and also simultaneously make the payment….and look for refund of difference between class 2 and class 3 for the years in question?

I don’t want to risk this gift horse by not meeting the payment deadline so am inclined to go with (b) above……unless this locks me in and precludes the HMRC from concluding I should have paid Class 2 for these years.

Anybody have any experience or knowledge on this?

Thanks

Last year I received my first letter from HMRC in April 2024 regarding my eligibility to make Class 2 contributions for 3 years (2021-22, 2022-23 & 2023-24), I sent the payments in July 2024 and my records were finally updated in January 2025. I am just wondering when I should expect to receive this years letter from HMRC to make a Class 2 contribution for 2024-25? I had thought I possibly would have received it by now as I'm assuming it will be an annual letter going forward.

I was also wondering this. My payments have been allocated incorrectly (missing 3 of the years I paid for from 2006 to 2024). I have rang HMRC twice and it still hasn't been corrected. I was told I should receive a letter in June to make this years payment but it hasn't arrived. I was also told they would send me a receipt but this hasn't happened. I paid in March 25. I know they are busy but have heard of people having their payments sorted with just one phone call. Not sure why I have been unable to do so.

Just an update folks, I called HMRC this morning and they said they are behind schedule with getting letters posted out. They did tell me that I can pay voluntary class 2 NIC's for the previous financial year anytime after April 6th of the current year so there is no real need to wait for delivery of a letter. But they didn't detail exactly how to do this online, so I might just wait for the letter to eventually arrive.
