Key Post UK State Pension - Make voluntary contributions to qualify for UK pension on top of Irish pension

The expats in the ski resorts have a good moan every year!

Good point about future. It’s an easy way to save money and also keep the money circulating in the home economy. Fuel allowances and travel subsidies are of course kept local.

Hi folks

I got my my HMRC letter setting out the amounts I need to pay - a mix of Class 2 and Class 3 contributions which ties in with my work history. However, since I submitted form CF83, I pulled a copy of my PRSI records and it turns out I actually paid PRSI during some of the years I was not in paid employment…..as a result of taxable income from rental properties during these years. I therefore believe I can appeal to have some of the Class 3 years changed to Class 2.

I only have until 5 July to “make the payment” outlined in the letter, so my question is, should I:

(a) appeal now and don’t make payment; or

(b) appeal now and also simultaneously make the payment….and look for refund of difference between class 2 and class 3 for the years in question?

I don’t want to risk this gift horse by not meeting the payment deadline so am inclined to go with (b) above……unless this locks me in and precludes the HMRC from concluding I should have paid Class 2 for these years.

Anybody have any experience or knowledge on this?

Thanks
