David McWilliams: "Bitcoin Betrayal"?

You've some homework to do.
You've hit the nail on the head. I've a load of washing to put on and my place needs a good sweep not to mention the bins need emptying (their contents have more intrisic value than a bitcoin). Have a great weekend. It's been fun debating with you and I admire you for sticking to your beliefs despite the vast array of evidence and sensible opinion to the contrary.

El Salvador, McDonalds
It says on the McDonald's screen "USD=$2.75". Can you explain? What is the unit of account?; there can only be one price else you have sillyness picking the best one to use? There could be many reasons in Bukele land for faux btc transactions. I refuse to believe that there is a constituency for whom btc is the most convenient.
Discussed to death. You're quite happy to use something with no intrinsic value as money 99.9% of the time so in consideration of 'money', it's no barrier.
This is pure wrong as any Nobel Laureate will tell you. Fiat is a legal entitlement to buy goods and services at a price level which the government undertakes to manage. Of course, that is only as good as that undertaking. There is absolutely no underpinning of btc which you yourself concede has a non-negligible chance of going to zero.

Yeah we should all pitch in here and help out. I'd say your priority list is as follows:

1. Washing/Sweeping/Bins
2. Doing your homework on BTC Energy use*
3. Continuing your input here.

*2 does come before 3. I'd love to see you back here but please don't come back and say 'the dog ate my homework'. :)

Delighted to help you with your faux-confusion. El Salvador has two official forms of legal tender - USD and BTC. As has been pointed out to you multiple times down through the years, unit of account is a nothing burger. Pull up any decent wallet app and its displaying the conversion in an instant. That's not a thing as much as you want to make it one Duke.

I mean anything is possible in terms of Fax Machine Guy and his ilk. That said, I don't think anyone here (or your proxy vote crew either for that matter) disputed the fact that fiat currency has zero intrinsic value. There seems to have been a deterioration in your condition there Duke. I'd get that seen to if I were you.

You've clearly never refueled in a border town.
I have, plenty of times in Newry. They price in sterling but accepted punts, at a rip off rate. People would transact in punts to avoid the hassle or costs of the moneychangers. This is completely different from buying your Big Mac with your phone and being giving a choice of different prices in different currencies. El Salvadorians in a McD Q looking up the latest rate - I don't think so. That's what I meant by what is their unit of account, what are they actually pricing in? If it is btc that the locals see as their unit of account then I am impressed, but I very much doubt it.

If you'd refuelled on the other side of the border, you would encounter filling stations with digital signs and pumps in GBP and EUR, with payment systems capable of accepting either, leaving the customer to decide which gives them better value.

I never ever saw that happen and I commuted between Belfast and Dublin every week. Typically the sign said "we accept € at 85p". They were pricing in their unit of account £. The € rate was usually a rip off but if you only had € cash you had no choice. I asked @tecate what is El Sal McD's unit of account and he has a knee jerk reaction that I am blaspheming the cult. Are McD staff contracted on a btc rate?

. Unless all these factors change bitcoin remains nothing less than a cloaked Ponzi Scheme (admittedly though useful for criminal money laundering).

The current money system has proven great for criminal money laundering.

I don't actually agree that bitcoin is good for ML. Every transaction is recorded and traceable. Perhaps historically the controls to capture ML were not there but they could be applied retroactively.

@Fortune Very interesting. I haven't been up North for a couple of years. Clearly this is different from a sign saying "we accept € @ 85p". It is practicable as both the price of oil and the $/£/€ exchange rates are relatively stable.
Crucially there is a genuine need as even with digital fiat individuals will face not insignificant exchange costs outside the primary currency of their credit card.
There is no such justification for El Sal McD offering btc prices. It is just pandering to the cult's sense of virtue or maybe simply to Bukele.

Hear hear, it's downright maddening. But fear not. Bob will put manners on these corrupt latins.
Thanks for the link. As usual some gems.
President Nayib Bukele has bought large amounts of the cryptocurrency and businesses in El Salvador now have to accept Bitcoin by law
Silly me. Of course McD were not massaging the dozen or so cultists in El Sal. They were ordered to do it. And this is a headline breakthrough on the cultists' social platforms. Go figure!
Further research yields this:
Wiki said:
Economist Steve Hanke said, "El Salvador now has the most distressed sovereign debt in the world, and it’s because of the bitcoin folly. The markets think that Bukele's gone mad, and he has." As of June 2022, the Salvadoran government had lost $56 million in bitcoin, and economists stated that the country is likely going to default on its debt.
Does the cult have any qualms about what it they are inflicting on one of the poorest countries in the World? Not at all. At a Miami cult-in they feted Bukele as a messiah and he wallowed in it even though most of the audience probably shared the Donald's view that El Sal is a sh1thole.

  • El Salvador's dollar bonds are yielding 70% annually, turning the heads of Wall Street giants such as JPMorgan Chase.
  • President Nayib Bukele's commitment to debt repayment is easing bondholder fears and attracting further investment.
This was from a cultist piece of propaganda dismissing any doubts about the success of Bukele's experiment.
Varadkar will not be trying to emulate Bukele's success any time soon.

Correction. It's from an article that sets out some facts. Facts are not propaganda. Now, if you have information that demonstrates that the facts stated are wayward, then lets hear it. I'll wait.

Further correction. It's not a case of anyone 'dismissing any doubts about the success of Bukele's experiment'...as you well know. It's quite specific. As per Bukele's tweet thread, it stands as confirmation of the opposite outcome relative to the assertion of an El Salvador default, contrary to the claims of almost every establishment/legacy sorry excuse for media that covered this topic back then. As he goes on to explain, practically none of them returned to the subject and covered the fact that El Salvador is performing exceptionally well in terms of its debt commitments.

It turns out that you're right to bring up the notion of propaganda. It's just a shame that your own bias prevents you from identifying where its coming from.

Here's some further reading on Bob and the 'gold bars and stacks of cash' - not a bitcoin in sight.

@tecate This is truly pathetic, your better than this. As you say The Guardian sees no implications for bitcoin whatsoever. A critic of bitcoin turns out to be a bad egg and the cult takes this as affirmation that their's is the one true faith.

You seem to be a tad confused on this topic. Let me clarify it for you.

The Guardian article covers the grift that Bob was involved in. It discusses the means by which Bob took his bribes - in Gold and in cash. I guess they're more suitable for bribery. Bitcoin must not be at the races on that score 'cos as you rightly point out the Guardian doesn't mention Bitcoin at all.

Now Bob and a couple of his fellow US senate grifters were awfully concerned about the damage that bitcoin could do in terms of the possibility of money laundering of all things. Meanwhile, Bob is taking bribes in gold and cash and not the very thing (bitcoin) that he said was ideal for illicit use.

To demonstrate further the grift that goes on in official circles, Bob called for regulation AFTER the FTX fraud. And yet Bob (and 33% of all Capitol Hill politicians) were the very ones that enabled that fraud. They legitimized that fraud. Bob received money through an FTX-sponsored PAC. Most of these grifter politicians, have been asked to return those funds which belong to ordinary people....and yet 90% of them haven't. What's the chances that your buddy Bob falls into that category?

I'm not any political supporter of Bukele or any politician for that matter. For all I know he could turn out to be the worst head of state of all time. However, these grifters that pass as US politicians or the sorry excuse for what passes for establishment media these days are the farthest thing from being in a strong position to point the finger elsewhere. They have zero credibility.

Ok, I suppose I see the point. I myself have never criticised btc on account of its sleazy clientele nor for its high electricity bills.

Bob is as sleazy as they come. Bob enables his sleaziness via gold and cash. ;)

Be less like Bob.
