Abbreviations and jargon used on Askaboutmoney

A simple alphabetical list of abbreviations and jargon used on Askaboutmoney, with generally accepted interpretations, expansions and explanations. There might be duplicate entries with more than one interpretation; context then becomes important, e.g "RS" or "SO".

If you have any additions, comments, suggestions, questions, queries, or disputes, please post them here.

If you prefer to use Google, DuckDuckGo, or another search engine, that is your prerogative; it is not the intention of this thread to limit your choice.

The blue-coloured expansions link to external sites to help by further expanding on that term, organisation's role or activity.

We've tried to avoid being a simple advertising medium and the links tend to be to consumer oriented, regulatory and supervisory agencies, or terms, so you won't find links to Harvey Norman's site or those of other retailers. :)

Thanks

Great work.
I have unstuck the original thread and stuck this updated version.

Used in the home energy a lot:

@mathepac

the list is very long. I wonder would if there is any point in splitting it in two. Financial and non-financial?
Or two columns - with the left hand column having the most used and the right hand column the rarely used? e.g:

AAM - Askaboutmoney (Occasionally AAB and AMM)
AE - Auto Enrollment
AIB - Allied Irish Bank
AFAIK - as far as i know
AMC - Annual Management Charge
AML - Anti Money Laundering
ARF - Approved Retirement Fund
AVC - Additional Voluntary Contribution (to an OPS - Occupational Pension Scheme)

BOI - Bank of Ireland
BTW - by the way

CAT - Capital Acquisitions Tax
CB - Central Bank
CC - Credit Card (it also means to copy an email to someone)
CCPC - Competition and Consumer Protection Commission
CGT - Capital Gains Tax

CPI - Consumer Price Index

BNPL - Buy Now Pay Later
BOGOF - Buy One, Get One Free

CNER - Cost Neutral Early Retirement
COB - Close of Business (here)
CoBC - Certificate of Benefits Comparison

FWIW, I wouldn't split it. People consult the list becaue they see an abbreviation and have no idea what it means. It's not helpful to them to have separate lists of financial and non-financial abbreviations; if they don't know what an abbreviation means, they may not know whether the meaning is financial or non-financial.

I don't see a long list as being a problem in itself. The list is ordered alphabetically. You don't have to read it from the start; you can go straight to the place where the abbreviation you want will be found.

I've added in a few more with reference to a variety of recent threads on here (and some which I still don't know which other have used on here!). I've thrown in a few definitions too because I imagine there a lot of novices on AAM who struggle with some of these financial terms that are bandied about and are sometimes even interchangable. So maybe this might eventual evolve into a reference glossary as much as just a list of abbreviations.

APR – Annual Percentage Rate

BER: Building Energy Rating

BES: Business Expansion Scheme

CFP: Certified Financial Planner/Professional

COAP (OACP): Contributary Old Age Pension (pensions)

FTD: Fixed Term Deposit

Differentiate between Stocks, Shares, Equities and Bonds?

Shares: investment of part ownership in a company, either public or private.

Stocks: Shares in Public listed companies listed and traded on a stock exchange somewhere in the world.

Bond: Investment in the form of a loan to a business or an entity (state) with a guaranteed return on investment.

Global Index Tracker or Global Index Fund: An index fund (also index tracker) is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to follow certain preset rules so that it can replicate the performance of a specified basket ("benchmark") of underlying securities.

Hedge – Something considered a safe investment against future risk

IBAN: International Banking Account Number

Investment Trust: A managed investment fund of carefully selected and diversified stock supposedly insulated against risk.

Thanks @Mayo1969, that kept me busy a while!

Some of your suggestions were already posted in the OP and with some, like WTE, I've changed the wording to what we've seen on AAM and what is used generally in healthcare settings.

One suggestion, CFP® - Certified Financial Planner™, has IP attached to it, so I've changed that in the OP.

The entries you had queries against, I've posted with expansions as I think they have relevance here.

As for the broader use of the thread, I'll leave that up to the mods to decide. I haven't posted those entries pending their decision but my tuppence worth is that while worthy, your suggested use is a step beyond the original purpose of the thread, and one which might tend to make it unwieldy.

This does seem to me to be beyond the purpose of the thread and would make it very unwieldy

But maybe it's a good idea to have a simple explanation of common financial terms. More of a dictionary than a list of acronyms.

and would make it very unwieldy
While I do appreciate what this thread is about and the work @mathepac is putting into it with the help of other posters
I do question the usefulness of such a thread when everybody has a search engine on the phone/tablet/computer
Anecdotally when I come across a abbreviation, a term I don't understand or a word I've never seen or used before, I just Google it
Creating a list of acronyms is one thing but a list of everything is over the top and in my mind a pointless exercise and won't be used by the vast majority of users who frequent this site

Acknowledge the work that OP has put in to this but I concur with Cervelo.
Easier and quicker to highlight the abbreviation, then Google it for the explanation.
IYKYK !

Would the mods consider modifying the existing AAM search facilities, button top right, to use our own repository, or ask XenForo to get them working properly?.
