    Irish Life Health Aviva Claim

As an incentive to join Aviva, the waiting period of 6 months was waived for my husband. He then went to his local GP with a verucca a week later (he didn't know it was a verucca). The treatment was carried out successfully at the GP's and all was well. Aviva is now refusing to pay up as they...

    ageing concrete with yogurt ??

It will work better if you scrape some lichen off a stone or surface nearby - stick it in a blender with the yoghurt, then pour it over the surface you need to cover. Keep the cats away or they'll lick it off!

    painting rational windows

We paint our windows every year as our house is on an exposed site near the sea but mostly they recommend every 2 to 3 years. We got the paint/varnish from Rationel and it's well worth it as you don't need very much and it dries super-quick especially in the Summer.

Costs not covered by med. card

Thanks for the advice. Your gp does sound really decent Darthvader. I spoke to the HSE and they basically said that it was up to the GP to charge or not. They should have been forewarned of extra costs, but there is no specific need to do so according to the HSE. It strikes me as a bit of...

    Glass Splashback - cost?

We also looked at the glass splashback as they do look great. However I heard that they are problematic to fit and prone to breakage, despite what the people who sell them say. So like the other poster we got the glass tiles in the colour that we wanted and managed to fit them ourselves - they...

Costs not covered by med. card

At least she was forewarned - what did they think she was going to do with it anyway?! It just seems very unfair as older people will not question either the charge or the fact that they might not really need it. My mother for example has never had high blood pressure in her life!

Geothermal underfloor heating-how long is yours on each day?

We have it only for downstairs as the house has an open plan design which means that the upstairs heats very easily. We also have a wood pellet stove for the evening during cold snaps. The heating is on for 4 hours 55 minutes at night at the moment and the house is very warm, 21 degrees on a...

Costs not covered by med. card

Both of my elderly parents have medical cards and both were separately told by their GP that they needed an overnight blood pressure monitor. Not until they returned the monitor were they told that the medical card didn't cover this, and they had to pay out €50 (each). Is this the normal...

    white oak stairs

We have the same kind of stairs and we were recommended Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor clear varnish. It's good for protection against heavy traffic and 2 years on the stairs still look spot on.

self catering holiday in west cork - help please!

We stayed in the Ballylickey Bay Cottages last year, which are located between Bantry and Glengarriff. The cottages were very comfortable, the location was very safe with lovely grounds and nice walks all around. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Electric kettle v. Hob kettle?

Thanks for that maximus, but we have moved house and the same thing has happened in the new house. I went and bought a Le Creuset whistling kettle today for €29 and I'm very happy with it - it's bright orange and it's a much more cheerful looking than any electric kettle I've seen!

    Electric kettle v. Hob kettle?

Thanks for that. I really don't know why we go through kettles so quickly as we don't live in a limescale area. Although boiling water on the gas hob is probably slightly less energy efficient there is also the environmental cost of yet another electric kettle to be produced which I want to...

    Electric kettle v. Hob kettle?

Our electric kettle has just broken again! We seem to go through them at a rate of one every 2 years and I'm sick of it. I am considering a kettle that I can boil on the (gas) hob. Does anyone have an idea which would be cheaper? Our last kettle was 3kw which used up a lot of energy to boil...

Has anyone a few years of experience with geothermal?

Hi mactheknife, HRV is on all day as I work from home. All lights incl. spots are cfl. Windows are rationel low-e, argon filled etc. All the insulation except the cavity one, was fitted by ourselves which meant we were scrupulous about it. The house was designed not to have any corridors...

Has anyone a few years of experience with geothermal?

The HRV was about €5,000 and the geothermal was approx. €10,000 - including drilling. The heating was off for nearly 6 months this year so the bills come out at about €1200. Like I said this includes all electricity usage for a family of 5.

Has anyone a few years of experience with geothermal?

We've been using borehole geothermal for 2 years in an 1800 sq. ft house with ufh downstairs only. There are radiators upstairs but as the house is designed with an open landing the rads. are rarely used. We also have a wood pellet stove for additional space heating. We also have a heat...

    Honda FRV

We're also looking for an FRV but would probably import a diesel from the uk. What I like about them is that they're not as high as some MPVs which would make them more stable on the road. We already have an accord and have been very happy with it up to now.

    Dental problems

Just thought that it was worth an update. My own dentist is giving me a full refund for the original root canal cost, so it pays to ask. Endodontist is going to charge twice the cost of the original bill, but I guess it will be worth the hassle. Thanks for the advice.

    Dental problems

So Markowitzman, is it worth asking for an independent endontist's advice over the one my dentist has referred me onto?
