    HMV sit in

I've been in the situation where a company went into liquidation owing us a month's wages. We weren't paid by the company in the end as other creditors came first and emptied the pot, but the state covered it, albeit after quite a delay (5-6 months if i recall correctly). There is a cap on what...

Tesco delivery: should we have tipped the delivery person?

No, they bring the goods to the kitchen because they need the crates back and to check that you have everything on the list. When I used this, the staff were extremely helpful, and over time you'd see the same people again on your area. So maybe if you'd seen them all year something at...

Inheritance: grandchildren have inheritance rights after the father has passed away?

Thanks Bronte. If there were other grandchildren who had been willed a share would it make a difference? Or should the child be looking to make a claim on the neglectful parent's inheritance now that they have some money in hand? The situation is hypothetical but trying to make...

Inheritance: grandchildren have inheritance rights after the father has passed away?

I know this is an old post, but thought it might be good to keep similar topic together. What are a child's inheritance rights if they are not included in a grandparent's will, and their father is living? The situation is a child that has not been adequately provided for by their father in...

Beginning of the end of the household charge?

In Cork it's going towards their fleet of brand new council vehicles - look out for them in January!

Household budgeting (Groceries/Toiletries etc) for a family in the recession

The old Home Economics book from the 80's/ 90's - All about Home Economics - is great for this type of thing. I still have a copy that I dip into for basic recipes. Just be careful if you're watching your weight, as they tended to add things to make recipes more 'nutritious' that we probably...

Inefficient state spending and the Household Charge

All of the above - + It's not a 'Household Charge' - 'Householders' aren't being charged, 'Mortgage-holders are. It's because many of us already pay bin charges that amount to more than the Household Charge alone plus a government levy on the service!!! It's because as someone pointed...

Visit to a consultant (in his "rooms" ) Cash only No cheques,no laser cards,no visa ?

SouthDoc, the out of hours GP service in Cork does the same - never understood why, as you're likely to be going there at strange times, not pre-planned, and may not have cash with you. People have to leave and drive to a nearby garage at all hours to get out cash to pay.

is the household charge in place of NPPR charge

Yes, my father mentioned that, in the 50's and 60's I think it was, people used to knock the chimney off any unused properties to avoid paying rates.

What is the best way to get rid of cooking smells from the kitchen?

Use extractor, open window for a little while, and then use a scented candle, I find yankee ones great, 10 or 15 minute gets rid of the smell.

David Creedon - A great Irish photographer and artist

He was featured in the Sunday Times magazine a couple of years back, I remember some of the photos. Beautiful work, and the type of house I remember from growing up in the country. Each farm would have had a liveable version of what is pictured here, but many had older houses which had that...

wording for salary review statement in contract

Can anyone help with the wording of a line to add to a work contract? It needs to be to the effect that the terms of the contract will be reviewed at a point in time. To ensure that this is not lip service, where a review is carried out and no change made, is there some wording that can be...

How to take care of a 3 month old kitten, recently acquired

I would think that's ok as long as someone does visit, there's dry food and water available all the time and the cat flap is there so he can get out if necessary. They can get a little lonely, so leaving a radio on while you're away can help.

Requesting a new bus route/ service

Hi there, thanks for the information. I realise it isn't a case of just asking, but it makes no sense that all of the children in the area need to have lifts to school etc. due to there being no bus service. There are no amenities to speak of in the area so the same goes for grocery shopping...

Requesting a new bus route/ service

Does anyone know how Bus Éireann decides when and where to establish new routes, or how to request a new service? I don't see anything on their website. We live in a an industrial area, about 5 minutes from a large commuter town. However, the only bus service is to the nearest city, and to go...

social welfare officers unannounced visit : can they search house without permission?

What threads Bronte? I'm not sure what you are saying here. I was made redundant at one stage and claimed rent allowance, and the SW inspector called to check the place that I was renting, but she certainly didn't check rooms for toothbrushes or shoes, not that there were any to hide in any case.

social welfare officers unannounced visit : can they search house without permission?

Fair enough; you probably could have made that clear; I've taken the liberty of adding a word to clarify: "I know people claiming lone parents allowance who are always on the watch out for inspectors in case they spot the partner living with them."
