Key Post UK State Pension - Make voluntary contributions to qualify for UK pension on top of Irish pension

Hi @mick999 I had a look and found this thread:-

My reading is prior to 5th April 2010, if you registered for NI in UK, you got the 3 "Starting Credits". I assume you wife may have registered after 5th April 1990, hence the Flag and the discounting of these credits.

Until 5 April 2010, to protect the National Insurance(NI) records of students who stayed in full time education for tax years commencing on or after 6 April 1975, regulation 4 (of the Social Security Regulations 1975) allowed a customer to be credited with Class 3 NICs, which count for State Pension purposes.
These starting credits (Juvenile credits) could be awarded for the full three tax years containing their 16th, 17th and 18th birthdays, whether or not the young person was in full time education, and were automatically recorded on the National Insurance and PAYE Service(NPS) account.
This will then be reflected through your Personal Tax Account when you view your NI record. However, the conditions for these credits are that you must have been resident in UK at the time the credits are awarded and registered for a UK NI account.
If you come from abroad and your Date of Entry into the UK scheme falls after these years, there will be a Flag set on the system to allow the “discounting” of these credits and have them removed.
The Personal Tax Account view of your NI record may still reflect these credits until they have actually been removed.

This (I think) is the response to my appeal, interestingly by email;

Hi @Yam1960 , Thanks or that ..
My wife worked in UK from 89-90, so I have sent off proof of her Irish PRSI payments, to see if that allows here to make and UK Voluntary contributions.

So, by way of update, I got my letter from HM Revenue today dated 5th April, inviting me to make class 2 payment of £179.40 for tax year 2024/25. Paid online just now. Be interesting to see how long it takes to get credited to my account.

Congratulations, I am still waiting for my 16 years to be credited to the correct years, never mind paying for 23/34 and 24/25

Hi @tiegan, How long have you been waiting. Paid 16 years from my wife back in August 2024, still not updated. Had paid mine in July '24 and it is all fully updated.

Can anyone answer the following, as can't seem to find anything about it here - I paid in for the back years last year and I can see them listed on the HMRC NI site.
Last week I received the letter to make a contribution for the last year 24/25 which is £178.50, which I done with revolut just as I had done the lump sum a year ago, including the reference NI number, IC followed by name.

Now, do I need to call them to tell them that the payment of £178.50 has been made, or will they pick up on it from their account and my reference? On the back of the letter it just explains how to do it from overseas but doesn't mention if you need to return any form or call them etc.

Anyone any definite experience with making these single annual NI payments?

I am trying to help a mate living here in South Africa that worked legally in the UK for 7 years. There is an agency charging 1000 euros to fill in forms to pay the 3 year contributions nerfed to make up 10 years but it's an awful amount of money in our country. Any other way to do this?

Following the discussions here he might be able to do it himself/herself?
You might find a similar discussion board for South Africans?
The starting point is checking current records and entitlement which can be done online. They will have presumably missed the deadline for buying the extra years but will have some small entitlement and depending on age might be able to increase that between now and retirement

I worked in Uk for 11 years and was originally expecting £50 a week. I had already registered my current address and details with them before I became aware of the deadline 2 years ago. It was a fairly easy process as I had my NI number and was able to get my records easily.

This is the form your friend will need to complete. CF83. It can be filled in online here. See green button bottom of the page on the linked below 'start now'

If they haven't already, make a gov.uk gateway account so they can see the status of their application.

Good Morning All, Beautiful day. Just got a text message to let me know that I will be receiving a phone call within the next week to let me know the class and amount of contributions due. I applied the week before the deadline.

Sounds like a scam. Hmrc don't text or phone. Everything is done by post. Beware!

If you applied to have a call back though, the only details they asked for was phone number so it might be ok.
I had the Xtrapension lads phone me the other day about three months after I contacted them. Not sure what they were going to do given the deadline is passed.

Hi, I have only found out about this UK state pension bonanza a few weeks ago (and, unfortunately for me it would seem, after that 5 April 2025 deadline). So... is it still worth doing it? Thanks in advance!
