Is anyone else having trouble with the HMRC app/website? For the last week, when I log in to try to check allocations, I get this:
Looking around, this seems to have happened to several others. It took about a month after reporting the glitch before it was finally fixed.

Once I could see my account again, with the years still not being allocated yet since payment last July, I rang to ask about this.

This time they said the payment had now been allocated across all the relevant years on their system, even if my account wasn't showing it yet. She then said that was a simple fix and she would take care of it after the call.

I was delighted when I checked my HMRC app/account a little while later to see that all the paid for years were finally showing as Full Year, also reflected in my updated Pension Forecast.

Can I ask what number you rang? I am still struggling to get voluntary Class 2 payments put on the system for my sister that were paid in Oct 2024. The good news is they confirm the money is there but seems to be incorrectly allocated to recent years and class 3. They have put a note in the file but nothing seems to change. Thanks!

Like some others on here, i have received two letters. The first detailed a mix of Class 2 and Class 3 payment amounts, which I was going to pay today. Then this morning I received another letter with an amount for Class 3 payments. Do I need to pay both amounts? The Class 3 amounts on the first letter were only partial for 2 years but on the second letter, the Class 3 amount due states it is for 18 years.

Can anybody shed light on this? I don't want to overpay but obviously don't want to underpay either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Letter has finally arrived for my wife, allowing for payment of a mix of class 2 and 3 since 2006. The letter states 31 days from date of letter (17 March). Does payment have to be received by 6 April deadline or do I indeed have until 17 April? Some of the info in the media at the moment is a bit hard to make sense of on this point.

I'm still awaiting letter for myself.

No, that gives you untilk 17 April to pay. Besides, I do not think HMRC go all Taliban if you miss that deadline by a few days. Their own postal system is a major factor in the delays.... it can take 3 - 4 weeks from the date of theiir letter for you to get it.

Just an update on my wife's case. Originally she was told that she didn't qualify as she had only worked for 1 year in 89/90 in UK.
Exactly one year ago, I sent them back a letter with proof of my wife's PRSI record in Ireland from the time she returned from the UK in 1990 up to the current day.

Yesterday she received letter from HMRC confirming that she can backpay Class 2 NICs shortfall for 19 years, which is the best possible scenario:

Thanks to everyone on this forum of the excellent advice and good luck to all !!

Cheers,

I have a friend who went to America from Uk, stayed there a good few years, she came back to Ireland and only has to pay class 2 from 2006 even though wasnt in Ireland immediately after leaving the UK. Meanwhile I have been asked to pay class 3 from 2006 onwards and I came back to Ireland after leaving UK and started working fairly soon afterwards.

Yes but the working in Ireland immediately after leaving the uk before 2006 not a requirement. In the early days of the process a lot of people thought it was as it wasn’t made clear.

Am I correct in thinking that I can still make a Class 2 voluntary contribution of £182 for the 2025/26 tax year and then after that it will have to be Class 3 only from the 2026/27 tax year onwards?

Yes, you will get letters later this year.
I'm not confident of recieving any letters as I didn't get any last year. I had to just go ahead and make the contribution and then got them to send me a receipt. They told me at the time that I didn't need to wait for a letter and that I could go ahead and make the payment for the previous tax year anytime after the start of the current tax year.

I called the Hmrc National Insurance line today.

As discussed on here already - for every year you buy back it is worth £6.89 per week.
But the very helpful lady advice was not to bother buying back the very last remaining year because the amount extra per week is not £6.89 but a very small amount and with the high cost of class 3 the payback period is so much longer.

Something lost in translation there I am afraid. If you paid the Class 2 rate of £185.50 (53 week year), yes it is worth an extra £6.89pw which is £358.50pa.... I do not see how it would not be worth it?
