SEPA Instant Progress, or the lack of it...

Received this afternoon from AIB, seems they’ll be supporting outbound SEPA Instant payments from the 25th August.

“Since January 2025, you have been able to receive instant payments to your payment account. This means your balance is updated straight away when someone sends you an instant payment. From 25 August 2025, we'll start to roll out the ability to send instant payments from your account. These payments will reach the receiving account within 10 seconds. We will let you know when these become available through our online services and on our website.”

EBS (as part of AIB) following suit on the same day:
https://www.ebs.ie/terms-and-conditions-updates
Since January 2025, you’ve been receiving payments instantly to your account. This means your balance is updated straight away.

From 25 August 2025, we’ll start to roll out payments you can send instantly from your account. These payments will reach whoever you are paying within 10 seconds. We will let you know when these become available through our website.

We’re also introducing a new check called ‘Verification of Payee’ from 5 October 2025 for all SEPA payments. This helps protect your money. Verification of Payee will check the name of the account you’re paying with the receiving bank to see if it matches the name you gave us. You can then decide if you still want to go ahead with the payment.

You’ll also be able to set limits on how much money you send through instant payments each day.

Revolut style payments is a bit of a misnomer. My first thought was "who would want to only be able to send payments to other credit union members?" since that's how revolut worked before SEPA Instant

AIB will also be introducing Verification of Payee (VOP) from 05/10/25.
A shiver down the spine for anyone with a síneadh fada, apostrophe or space in their surname!

Has anyone with AIB or EBS tried to make an instant payment yet? I don't seem to have the option (if one is even to be given in the first place) so transfers are defaulting to standard SEPA (which, to be fair is only taking a few hours in some cases).

Payment received just now from AIB, 15 hours late. I notice they also don't record the time the payment was made in the app. Very shoddy all round

Perhaps I was too hasty in my earlier post, AIB/EBS stated the functionality would become available from 25/08/25

AIB:
  • From 25 August 2025, we’ll start to roll out the ability to send instant payments from your account. We will let you know when these become available through our online services and on our website.

EBS:
We’ll soon start to roll out payments you can send instantly from your account. These payments will reach whoever you are paying within 10 seconds. We will let you know when these become available through our website.

EBS have maintenance scheduled for Thursday night, maybe they are introducing this functionality then, or it might be unrelated:

Essential maintenance will be carried out on EBS Online Banking on Thursday 28th August, as a result EBS Your Accounts Online may be unavailable between 11.30pm on Thursday and 2.30am on Friday 29th August.

Anyone else also getting an error with ebs online banking? the push notification doesn't arrive and this message and a blank box underneath shows:

I just checked it there and it works fine for me.

Had that yesterday alright.

With EBS 50% of the confirmation texts never arrive, its free so I suck it up but can be frustrating waiting and waiting until it eventually prompts you to enter a code using the authenticator.

N26 outbound has been running great for about a month now. It's so great they can no longer charge a quid for instant transfers. Though I find it funny they still offer the option to send slow 2-3 day transfers instead of instant.

@shweeney How about when you send from AIB to N26 ?

sending AIB->N26 is a PITA because it requires the card reader so I stopped doing it. Instead I top up Revolut from AIB and then send to N26 from Revolut, which is all instant.
