Another legend of football passes on. RIP Franco Baresi. One of the finest defenders ever to have played the game. Always in the right place, always had time on the ball, always made it look effortless.

Franco Baresi taken far too early , a one club man for AC Milan whose brother Beppe was a stalwart defender with city rivals inter Milan , must have made for interesting family dinners !

Fine and rough too, of course. Though he usually picked up the player he flattened and shook hands with him to avoid a yellow card.

Seems to be a bit of a mystery surrounding the precise timeline of Glen Hansard's accident.
The pub and the Gardai are stating that he left The Wren's Nest at closing time - 11.30pm. But the crash happened four hours later just up the road from the pub. That's a lot of time unaccounted for, especially at that time of the night. Obviously, there's a lot of speculation online but I've no doubt the Garda investigation will establish the full circumstances.

We have established that gardai have confirmed Hansard left a pub in the area - the Wren’s Nest - when it closed at the normal weekday time of 11.30pm. But because the accident happened at around 4.30am, there is a four-hour period between him leaving the Wren’s Nest and the crash taking place. Gardai are now trying to establish where he was in those four hours, sources say. They’ve appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Gardaí will speak to people who were with Glen Hansard in the hours before he died as they build a timeline of the tragedy. Hansard was found beside his motorbike in the early hours of Wednesday in west Dublin. His death is being treated as a road traffic accident.
A file will be prepared for the Coroner’s Court once gardaí have concluded their investigation into the singer-songwriter’s death.

I actually travelled that road the evening before his death coming back from Mullingar to Castleknock.
Its very much a country road running right alongside the liffey.
Along the road are about circa 15 to 20 ramps with the Wrens Nest towards the end of them.
They aren't very well seen on the road as the paint has mostly disappeared.
Use the road regularly 2 or 3 times a week, at night time I do occasionally fail to see the ramps and if going even a little too fast tgey give the car and driver a sharp reminder.
If he did similar on a bike then could explain the accident. However speculation.

A public wake will be held for Hansard in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, on Monday 3 August between 11am and 4pm.
Hansard will lie in repose for those wishing to pay their respects.
The funeral will take place the following day at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin city centre at 1:30pm. While the funeral will also be open to the public, access inside the cathedral will be limited given the numbers expected. Music at the funeral will be provided by Hansard's friends and family.
The funeral will also be broadcast on the RTÉ News channel.

I wonder if I'm alone in thinking the public reaction - in particular the media and political response has been somewhat over the top? Don't mean to be disrespectful - he was clearly loved by a lot of people and his passing was tragic and unexpected.
But it looks like his funeral will be bigger than that of Sinead O'Connor, Shane MacGowan, Dolores O'Riordan, Moya Brennan, Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott - all combined. It's almost a State funeral.
I met him a few times over the years - going back to about 1996 and saw him live probably dozens of times - most recently with the Frames at the Hot Press 50th bash in the 3 Arena. Was never really a fan of his singing style or songwriting but a lot of people were - and he usually had great musicians in his band which helps.

Have been following the Jason Arday case for a couple of weeks now. It reached GUBU levels of intensity and scrutiny in the media, academia, politics and the wider, so-called "culture wars." The tragic outcome has catapulted an already divisive and bitter debate into the stratosphere - the recriminations will continue for some time to come.
