RIP Thread for Notable People

Sad news indeed. A tremendously talented actress and all round decent type.

She was so funny the night she was on Late Late some years ago about throwing the Oscar around from one place to another. It appeared as if half the time she did not even know where she had left it. Hope her poor dog will be ok as by all accounts she brought it everywhere with her :(

I think it was one of her neighbours on the radio today talking about her driving her yellow car and every time she did she wore her yellow jacket :D

throwing the Oscar around from one place to another

She said on the Tommy Tiernan interview that she used the Oscar as a doorstop to keep the toilet door open!

In more recent interviews she seemed to have led an unhappy, lonely life. She also said she suffered from depression over the years, not helped by repeated miscarriages and [alleged] domestic violence.

This Terry O'Neill photo says it all about Keegan. The poor background in the slums of Doncaster with a father unable to work due to miner's lung and malaria got in Burma. The grit and determination to succeed in his sport and get some of the better things in life. The poise of a sportsman's personal confidence yet also the glance of insecurity about what may come next.

Keegan was the first British player to make serious money from the game - both from playing and from off-field commercial activities. And good luck to him. After Keegan left, all the old assurances of the Football League being the best in the world were exposed as exploitative sham. Brady, Francis and many more English players left to improve their game, see another lifestyle and make serious dough.

It was a pity English football hit the doldrums in the 70s so Keegan wouldn't play in the World Cup at his prime. Also very sad that Newcastle couldn't win a league title for him in the 1990s. And that his England management tenure didn't yield more.

But nothing can deny him the everlasting image as the poor boy who made good. And who remained a nice down-to-earth bloke always.

Always with us, Kev. :)

Reports that musician Glen Hansard (The Commitments, Once, The Frames) has died aged 56 in a crash.

Seems to be this incident:

Also in music, French DJ and musician Kavinsky, known for his electronic classic Nightcall, has been found dead at his home in Paris, authorities have said. The self-taught pianist, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, would have turned 51 on Friday.

Nightcall was on the soundtrack to Ryan Gosling movie Drive, and Kavinsky played it at the closing ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
