Northern Rock bailed out by Bank of England

I requested 2 withdrawals, one big on the 16th and the rest the 17th. I got the first last Thursday 20th and the second Friday 21st.

Dont understand why they are holding you up Coolaboy. Is it coming into one of the big 2 here?

Cheers Ohno, I see what you mean. That might make sense then, scared me nonetheless. Should probably go in and cancel second transaction then. Only problem is it's asking me a security question for the first time and I'm not sure do I answer with a space or not!!! hells bells! And I'm abroad at the minute, so a security password will be sent to my home, where i am not there to get it at the moment. Bad timing for me :o I might wait to see if they change the question by tomorrow or the day after!

Okay, managed to log in today with scary security question correctly answered :D

So I was going to cancel the pending transaction to transfer money, since I've already put one in close my account (and now I know 0.00 transfer balance is normal), but it won't let me cancel any pending tranactions. I thought it would as Rabo does. So I will have to wait and see if they close the account successfully and hope the money does not move twice. But that seems to be easily fixable too...getting the money at all seems to be the hard bit.

Has anyone had problems using their normal log in procedure - I have entered my customer ID and 2 & 3rd digits of password absolutely spot on - of that I'm certain, but its saying incorrect and now I've only one attempt left.

Am reluctant to try again and get locked out in case its a glitch. Can't get near login page at the moment anyway, but anyone had this problem??

I have resisted so far removing my money however as I didn't want to be a part of the panicing herd, but it really doesn't look good for the bank anymore.

are you sure the caps lock isn't om? The customer number consists of capitals and numbers.

PS my transaction still pending from the 16th.

Got a third password today and it works! I was locked out since Thursday September 13.

My second withdrawal left my a/c yesterday.

My a/c is closed.

@mollster, I'd leave it till tomorrow then you'll have 3 fresh attempts to get it right, better than waiting for new password to be posted out.

For those recent posters who tried to conduct transfer on Sept 16th..

I was in a simialr boat until I rang the Dublin NR office on Monday evening to check status of my transaction. I was told that the 'system' did not handle all requests that day (sept 16th) correctly, which meant that it was appearing as 'pending' but was not actually going anywhere. In turn, the guy I was dealing with immediately put in a 'Same Day' transfer free of cost (due to the 'system' issue) and I'm glad to say the money finally arrived at its destination today..

Cheers for that. I'll ring them as soon as I can.

I'm one of those, though checking today it appears to have moved from "pending" to "electronic transfer"(btw it does appear initially as "pending" in the pending transactions screen right?:o -work exhausted here and never needed to withdraw before)... so i'll wait somewhat more.. ;)
Though if i don't see it by the end of the week i think its time to call the Dublin office. Has anyone else called them and managed to get the free same day transfer? Wondering if it depends on the agent taking your call...

what's the legal situation for duplicate payments?

Hi,

Like others on this thread I've received a duplicate deposit based on one transfer request made from my northern rock account to my nominated account. Aside from the moral debate, what's the legal situation regarding this? Are we obliged to return it? If the bank had gone bust, they wouldn't be so concerned about my money... I fancy a new car!!! :D :D :D

It's not your money - you are obliged to return it :(

I don't miss NR at all: their rate is similar to other banks and their internet banking was always quite awful in my opinion...:( I wish them all the best but they'd better improve both customer service and internet banking facility in my opinion...

Phew, some progress at last. I opted to close account by internet on Thursday of last week, after cut-off time. Account is closed today, tax and interested calculated and money on the way to my bank account. So touch wood, it should get there in the next few days.

Is there any more news on the bank's situation? Are there still people queuing or has it slowed down by now? I haven't seen anything much in internet news since.

I noted there was an option to re-invest the money with Northern Rock...I have to say I personally would be slow to do this...this has put the frighteners on me. How do other people think now?

I made a transfer on September 18th, and was still waiting. So I just phoned. Call was answered quickly, and helpful person told me that the transaction had gotten "stuck" (?) on my end, so she put through a duplicate transaction request which should clear by Friday or Monday. So I would advise people to phone them direct.

Re: BOI DepositLine Offering

Yes, very interesting!

The hard copy of the T&C I got today for the 6 month DepositLine, targeted at NR customers, as far as I can see, (at a quick scan) is identical to the 6 month T&C at the above link.
Note: the T&C I got today is Issue 5, the one at the link above is Issue 4.

The other hard copy of T&C I got today, titled "Demand DepositLine", is a bit different to the 3 month one at the link above (see my previous post for some details).

Not sure my local branch really understood all the nuances of the T&C's at this stage, got the impression they were reading a lot of this fo rthe first time also.

So, seems BOI's strategy was to get something out quick, to hoover up the NR money, by dusting down something already on offer to business customers. Not the BOI of old it seems ?................

I rang BOI's Savings Dept., but, nobody could tell me the details though they knew of the product launch! BOI 365 Online couldn't add anything. BOI logged a call for someone to ring me back yesterday afternoon or, at the latest according to them, this morning. It being 15:10 now, I can only assume BOI have no interest in my substantial NR money.

Then again, having been a current account holder with BOI for 30 years, this comes as no surprise! They just slap on fees and charges (the automated annual overdraft facilty fee of €25 per annum is the biggest ripoff!).

This is why Rabodirect, Bank of Scotland and NR have made such inroads into Ireland. BOI and AIB only deliver to shareholders, customers coming a distant second. It may be time to move my current account and those in my family.

I hope they observe the big lump moving from my current account to their competitors!

Still waiting for my money ten days later. Was again given a fobbing off on the phone by a very smooth talking gentleman.

Password has been reset - so I can't even get through to the account.

They don't inspire great confidence.

Europhile - phone again. I've just spoken to a very helpful woman in UK (ph 6020324) who checked what had happened after another call I made yesterday which was dealt with by a young guy here (4806050). I too was getting concerned that I'd been fobbed off. No, she assured me that my money (the second and largest amount only requested yesterday) was on its way and would take 3-4 working days to arrive. I believe her and unless the situation changes will most likely re-invest with N.R. and Rabo.

I agree with comments made by carpedeum - AIB also charges €25 for an overdraft facility. It's also true there was no improvement in savings rates until N.R. and Rabo arrived so when the panic subsides perhaps it will be time to evaluate which Banks are the safest ones to entrust with our savings - relatively speaking.

Thanks for the pm Sherib and as I said already we think along the same lines. After a lot of consideration, and under severe pressure from Mrs Oldtimer, I applied for some of my savings last Friday and I notice a cheque has been issued and on its way. I have also looked around for an alternative place to put it and to be honest none as good as NR e.g. 4.50% and money on demand (I have the max in Rabo and FA plus regular saver accounts). Certainly the main banks here have a long way to go - even the new BofI product has strings attached. I notice the share price of NR rose to-day amid speculation of a take-over. Interesting to watch what happens - glad I didn't close my account.

dear god, am I seeing things?

My money has been sent. It only took 8 working days, god bless 'demand' online accounts.
