How Did I Manage to Secure 19 Years!

I got them too. But to be clear, it doesn't show as "Full Year" on your record for three specific years during which you didn't work.

I can't remember where it was in my online account, but when I first checked my record to see if I had three years it said "You Have 6 Years", which was really confusing until I found out why.

Thanks @ClubMan that post you linked seems to say " Also if you are a person born between 5 th. of April 1959 and 5 th. of April 1992, you probably have 3 years of juvenile for the tax years of your 16th, 17th and 18th. birthdays with no requirement to have been in the UK at the time. These juvenile credits can be hard to find on Gov,uk. They usually show up in the pension forecast " not sure where the reference is for that information, it also says ultimately the UK government decide so if I was entitled to it in sure I would've gotten it, thank you for your help all the same
Thanks @jdc070 and @BetsyClark I appear to young for this scheme, a pity

I also had added years having started UK work in my 20s in 1986.

I became aware of them in later life taking the view that a mistake in my favour was not something to query. Because of this forum I discovered they were automatic juvenile years.

However, having been contracted out for state pension purposes I had to pay an extra 3 years NICS to get on track for the maximum state pension entitlement, so it evened out in the end.

Does anyone have less than 10 years credits? Can they be aggregated with the Irish credits to get that percentage of the UK pension, or do you need at least 10?

I've checked my online UK Pension record, having paid for 19 Back years on 30/03/26, my record on HRMC changed today, this shows that for years 2019/20 to 2024/25 these are now marked as 'Full Years', but the years prior are not, and show as 'Year is not Full', why would only the 6 recent years and not the older years be marked as Full?

It's frustrating, but their system automatically credits the last six years plus any class 3 payments first, before a human worker reviews the payment to make the correct allocations. Also frustrating is that even when the correct allocations are made on the internal system, those changes are not immediately reflected on the online portal/app (and may require contacting them to update it). In my case, I waited over six months.

This has been my experience, and others'.

Quick update, my years have now been allocated and confirmed that I have 25 years. I've paid for 2025/26 but thats not showing yet, but looking on portal now, its saying I need 11 more? I thought it would be 10 (and 9 after the payment for 2025/26 is reflected)

I would say the mention of 11 years relates to the year in which you will turn 67. At the moment 35 yearly contributions are required for a full UK pension so 9 more years should secure you a full pension unless the rules change!

@JDOC70

I am in a similar position but was working there for 10 years and did manage to buy back all years from 2006.

However, my research suggests that the 3 juvenile years credited will not actually count to get to the 35 years required under the new regime.

I understand that these 3 years credit would apply if you were looking to get a max uk pension under the previous 44 year system.

Under the newish 35 year system, you will need to have either worked the years (and paid the NI) or bought back the years (either class 2 or 3) and these “start years” will not count.

The HRMC NI app tells me how many more years I need to make a class 3 contribution to get a full pension (35/35) and it ignores the 3 start years.

Sorry to bear this bad news.

The 3 juvenile years were added to mine. Do you have to have been in the UK before a certain year for that to apply?

@ JSOC70

I have been told that I have to reach 37/37 years contributions (and not 35/35 as per normal) because seemingly I was in a ‘contracted out employment’ for a few years.

Possibly best to give them a quick call to clarify where the anomaly is.

^^^^ Thanks for messages above (not sure how to quote from replies), certainly seems contradictory to me

I worked 3 years
Received the 3 Juvenile years
Bought back 20 (thats 19 years + 2025/26 year which is yet to be credited)

So without the juvenile years and the yet to be credited, thats 22 years, 13 years off the full pension

But they are quoting 11, not too phased either way, I'm as good as there (if I pay 9 more years)

Juvenile do counts towards Pension, from post below here

@Millie*
Contracted out means you did not pay the full rate of National Insurance, and do not qualify for UK state pension for that period.
You were probably paying into a private pension in the UK for this period?
The final return from this, at retirement should more than cover the 2 missing years
