How Did I Manage to Secure 19 Years!

Received my HRMC letter yesterday, allowing me to buy back 19 years all at class 2. Total cost £3,148. I have to pay within 31 days of date on letter

I worked over 3 Tax years in the 90's, I only submitted my application in November'25. I was expecting to be able to purchase back only 6 years. Indeed the letter details I have 6 qualifying years to 05/04/25, no idea how I even have 6, 3 years is what I worked

How did I manage to achieve 19 years by submitting only in Nov'25?

So if I buy 19 + 6, will I be still able to purchase a further 10 years (at the higher class with new rules etc) in future years to max out at 35 for a full pension?

You have 6years because you were granted 3 extra (juvenile) years or starting credits for ages 16/17/18 regardless of whether you lived in the UK or not at this time! The reason these years were granted was to ensure that young people were not disadvantaged by staying on in Education. At that time the majority of young people left school and started working at age 16. I have a similar work history to you in the UK and was equally surprised to find out that information.

No made no call or contact, I thought I missed boat, I did use an Agent for my application, but a turn-a-round in 4 months I was not expecting either

Thanks for details on the additional 3 years, did not know that

19+6=25 years, or 71% of a full pension is a pretty good return for £3,148

You had 3 qualifying years as you worked 3 years. The extra 3 years you were given to bring you to 6 years were most likely 3 juvenile years or notional years. In my own case, I had only one qualifying year but was awarded these 3 juvenile years which brought me to 4 which made me eligible.

One further Q, my shortfall years are up to 2024/25, will I still be able to buy 2025/26 at the Class 2 rate, if so when will I be notified on this?

Yes, once you ticked the box on your CF83 to continue making ongoing national insurance payments. You should get a letter in April/May telling you what the class 2 amount is for the previous tax year. However, myself and several others on this platform never received a letter last year. I rang a few times to query this, with promises that the letter would be sent, but it never was. I chanced paying anyway and it was credited 6 weeks later. I intend to do the same this year if I don't receive the letter. All class 2 payers are due to receive a letter in July this year advising us how we can apply to pay class 3 for future years. The details of this are uncertain as yet.

19 years back payments made!, so I'm in for 25 years, with 25/26 to come at Class 2, I'll have nearly 75% UK State Pension for under €4k

Q, are there any other benefits you'd qualify for if you have a State Pension, things like Free travel etc?

I think you have to be resident in the UK to qualify for other benefits ,but there are benefits in Ireland you may qualify as a result of receiving the UK state pension. For example you could apply for the household benefit package at aged 67 rather than age 70. This is only of benefit if you, like me, do not have an Irish State Pension. I am a D rate PRSI payer here, but have a year of A rate contributions and am hoping that might be considered by the UK as an extra year.

I registered and applied online using form CF83 only at the beginning of March this year. I had no previous contact with HMRC. Yesterday, a letter (INSL33a) from HMRC arrived indicating Class 2 shortfall rates back to 2006 (total £3,147.65) and a payment date within 31 days of the date of the letter (March 31). Similar to JDOC70, I was expecting to be limited to 6 years. Does this actually mean in fact that I can/should simply proceed to pay these 19 years and will benefit accordingly.?

Yes I did use the Agent quoted, not affiliated with them whatsoever, I read an article on the paper last Oct, they were even surprised I managed to get the full back dating, made it all easy for me, so fees didn’t bother me, but great feedback this forum to guide you

do you mind me asking how did you get the extra 3 juvenile years,
Anything useful here?

I got them automatically, there is no applying. I stand corrected but I think those that worked in UK prior to 2010 received them, in my case I worked back in 1996
