Nice one Carpenter. Reckon I'll give them a call and discuss how much I'd need, but will probably end up getting the minimum four 25kg tubs which will cost around €200 with delivery I'd say. Reckon I'll either find use for the leftover or someone that'll be interested in it.

Fingers crossed that their brick cleaning products can get the manky red paint off the bricks on the house we just bought so that we can get it back to the lovely natural brick colour underneath....seriously wonder what some people are thinking sometimes....they had the pointing painted black for crying out loud!

Hi ohPinchy, I have the same problem with an old house I've just bought - lovely bricks painted red including the pointing. So if you get that brick paint stripper will you post how you got on with it. thanks

Will do secondtime, and will give you a shout if I have any brick cleaner leftover, dont suppose you're interested in going halves on the Klingstrip stuff itself? Carpenter - you'll get your 10% finders fee!

I actually already bought some brick cleaner in the builder suppliers a while back (hydrochloric acid in it I think) but haven't had a chance to try it with a power washer yet. Will try it and then make a decision on whether to buy off the Sudbury company after that.

Just a word of warning about the brick cleaner Ohpinchy. What you have (hydrochloric acid) is designed to remove mortar splashes and cement based adhesions. The paint on your beickwork is solvent based so it won't make much of a dint in it, best of with the specialist paint stripper I'd say........

I don't want to be coming in on secondtime but if there is some left over after you sort him/her out, I'd definitely be interested on getting hold of some of this stuff. I bought an old house that is covered in white gloss, including two dressers, all doors, architraves, bannisters etc. I also have dodgy varnish on the wooden surround on the fireplace. I've tried some of the stuff available in the hardware shops and it's so much hassle and effort for such a rubbish result, I was going to try and live with it but this sounds like it might sort it out for me.

MissRibena, I know I'm going to sound like I have a share in Klingstrip or something, but I can't recommend this stuff highly enough! I used it to strip layers of old varnish from a detailed carved panel about 2' x 3' recently I did the job in a couple of hours with fantastic results. I've used gallons of Nitromors etc in the past on restoration jobs, including an old chest of drawers, and there is no comparison in terms of ease of use, lack of fumes dirt etc.

I actually remembered about your house and was reckoning you might be interested in this stuff. I'll call them tomorrow probably to see how much the minimum order is and let you know, and then I'll post back with the results.

Yeh, Carpenter I reckon you're right about the brick cleaner, its a cleaner as opposed to a paint remover so I'll get the proper gear off Sudbury. Would the paint on my bricks be solvent based or would it be some form of water based emulsion - I can't tell. Could post a photo if that would help.

Don't know if a photo would help with determining the paint type....it's probably a waterbased/ acrylic emulsion , Weathershield maybe? Is the surface flaky or powdery? If it is its probably water based....

At the moment I'm in D24 and the house I'm renovating is in D12, and I work in Sandyford so I'm sure we could arrange to meet at a weekend no problem.

yeah that would be fine. I need to strip about 12 doors front and back, with at least 10 layers of white gloss on them - any idea how much klingstrip that would take? And I need to strip the red external paint from brickwork and pointing around 8 windows and under the eaves for a 4 bedroom semi (all painted red). The rest of the of the outside of the house was an old silver/grey type of pebbledash that has been painted white. It's not totally horrible but I would rather have it back to the orignal unpainted state so that it would be the same as all the other houses on the road. Carpenter would you know if the brick cleaner would work on this if it was used with a power hose??

Hi guys

I don't need any brickcleaner (thank god, by the sounds of it!) but definitely up for the stripper (ooh er). If you reckon you need the whole lot between the two of you, don't worry I won't take offence - if it's as good as it says, I'm sure there would be a round two of this. I'm in the sticks, but my bf works in the smoke so either he'll collect it or I'll get someone like Interlink on the case.

I don't think a powerwasher is going to remove the paint, likewise brick cleaner might affect the colour but probably won't help with removing it , besides it wouldn't be a good idea to run that acid thro' your powerwasher, it would attack the aluminium alloy internal parts. probably best to clean it down and repaint with a more sympathetic paint colour/ paint type. If you powerwash it down with clean water you'll get a better idea of how it'll clean up....

Hi,

I rang them today and they're very helpful. He's getting back to me tomorrow with the freight charge for delivery but it will be pricey cos its a hazardous substance and theres paperwork involved. The more we order the better itll work out but I probably only need one 25KG tub (36eur ex vat & delivery) and my sister needs one too. Minimum of four for the order, but no upper limit.

Will let you know the quote when he gets back to me and we can suss it out then or think of an alternative.

I'll take a tub. I probably would need more if it works out but I'm afraid to chance it in case it doesn't do the trick (or I get fed up of stripping :)). Might be worth mentioning to them that there should be no VAT when it's exported to another EU country.

There's another website that does it but it seems more expensive; www.decoratingdirect.co.uk. Can't find any trace of it in Ireland, which is a real shame. Pity some paint shop wouldn't buy in a pallet or get distribution of it cos the shipping will probably be based on a pallet lot. My guess is that shipping could come in at €200.

Hi,

The delivery charge came in at £65 which is €95 for 72 carriage, which I think is excellent considering theres 125kg involved.

I'm going to order 4 25kg tubs of Kling Strip, and one 25kg tub of the brick cleaner (for me). I will need one tub of kling strip, my sister will need one, and then Rebecca will take one, and we can work out who needs the 4th tub as I or my sister might need it or Rebecca might want it. Don't think there'll be a problem shifting it.

Delivery is £65 for 5 25kg tubs = £13 delivery for each 25kg tub.

Klingstrip is £25 each for each 25kg tub. Plus delivery makes it £38 for each 25kg tub.

I will ask them to remove the VAT (is that correct?) but if the VAT is included (as she indicated in the email) at 17.5% it would be £44.65 total for each 25KG tub of Kling Strip. That is 65.70euro. I think thats reasonable.

They do have a guy stocking it in Ireland, a guy called Tony Devine in Spawell, Dublin. He was charging €35 plus VAT for only the 9kg tub of Kling Strip so I think going to them direct is the best value.

I will place the order in the next hour so Rebecca get back to me if you get this.
