Work Pay Dates

We are paid December salary a little early, just before the holiday shut down.
This year, they have decided to hold it until after Christmas, but are not paying on the date which would be expected by the normal schedule (friday following month end), rather the following Monday, January 4th.
This will mean payment after mortgage etc leaves people's bank accounts, at a very expensive time of the year.
This was announced in a very low key and frankly underhand way, over a year ago, and nobody, mangement included, noticed it.
Is there a precedent set by the previous practice (many years standing) which would allow us to insist on full or part payment on schedule for Jan 1st?

What is the company's financial position?

It's very odd to be paying people after Xmas. I would have thought that most employers would pay people before Xmas.

If they gave you a year's advance notice, it's a bit late to be challenging it now. A practical solution might be to ask them to make exceptions for those who really need it - which could well be most people.

When the decision would have been made things were dicey, but business has been better than expected this year, and I'd be very surprised if there were cash-flow issues to prevent them paying us.
It's interesting to hear that most businesses would pay wages pre-christmas, I didn't realise it was common.

You say you get paid on the Friday after month end, which this year happens to be Janurary 1st, and is also a Bank Holiday, will probably not be in your banks until the 4th, mortages etc due on the 1st will not be taken out of bank accounts until the 4th.

It is very normal to be paid December wages early, we are paid on the 17th, and then not paid until the last Thurs in Janurary, which is a long way off. I think people where i work would prefer to be in your situation as if you don't have the money you can't spend it & won't spend the last 2 weeks of Janurary broke.
