Who's for President 2025? Any takers?

Yes, Connolly is yet another Galway Socialist with an eerily similar CV to Michael D - former lecturer, former Galway Mayor, former Labour Councillor - and Gaeilgoir. Has all the essential credentials i.e the mandatory interest in "human rights," and the weary habit of getting involved in the politics of far-flung places, which are none of our business yet provide glowing media coverage at home. (Apart from when it goes spectacularly and embarrassingly wrong - she was instrumental in the campaign to award Aung San Suu Kyi the Freedom of Galway - which of course had to be revoked when they found out she didn't quite fit the profile.)

And it goes without saying that Palestine/Gaza looms large in her worldview. Sigh...

Is she also a Po-et and quite possibly Ireland's greatest living intellectual?
Has she, in her own words, proclaimed that she has been on the right side of every social issue in this country in the last 40 years?
Has she the family home sub-divided into student flats but pontificates about landlords?
Is she utterly bereft of humility?

If so, then she fits the bill.

I'd like to see Linda Irvine go for it. Irish language activist from East Belfast. She has done amazing work to promote and link the Protestant community to their Irish language heritage.

I doubt she holds Irish Citizenship so tat might be a problem.

Interestingly at the turn of the last Century a large minority of Unionists spoke Irish but the language was weaponised by Nationalists and it died out in the Unionist community (of course the English had weaponised English as a colonial tool long before that). People like Linda represent an Ireland freed from it's history be really understanding that history.

If she was born on the island of Ireland, under the GFA that will not be an obstacle.

Indeed, it is why I think she would be an ideal candidate. Even if she didnt get elected her platform would have a ripple effect in the positive, imo.

Correct but she wouldn't be the first President from the North and her brother was certainly born in the North
There's no residency requirement associated with Presidential candidates but they must be Irish citizens. As someone born in Northern Ireland she is entitle to Irish and/or British citizenship. Given her tribal background I assume that she only has the latter.

I wouldn't be so sure about the tribal effect. She is very atoned to nationalist sensitivies being a President of the first GAA club in East Belfast.

I remember the Brexit debacle and the surge of applications for Irish passports from the great and good of the Unionist tradition. I think even Ian Paisley Jnr saw the wisdom on formally recognising his Irishness.

Someone in Dundalk put a fiver on McDonald and Boyle sports have dropped her to 4/1 from 11/2

Considering where Boyle sports are based, there could be some inside info :D

Connolly doesn't seem to resonate with many people and labour still have an issue with her

I was just referring to the tribe she comes from. Northern Ireland is a classic example of a tribal conflict.

Quite possibly true. My point is only that she must hold Irish citizenship in order to be Irish President.

It would be interesting to see if the Shinners get behind her candidacy, given that they claim to want a united Ireland which respects all traditions equally (though in my experience a lot of their supporters are racist and anti-immigrant so not really all traditions).
