when planting a tree or plant should you put back the layer of grass or just leave the soil?
 
thanks, i planted lavender but to stop cats rooting in the soil put some decoartive stone around it is that OK?

title should be planting question not panting sorry
 
find the bigger the circle away from tree the easier to mow, well for himself anyway.
 
It also depends on the size of the tree. If it's still quite small, it won't want the competition for resources from other plants. Once it's big enough, the roots are that much deeper than everything else, so it isn't affected by other plants.

Deffo agree with above. A forester showed me three pictures of trees sown at the same time. One was sprayed around to kill off all competing vegetation. The second had all competing vegetation mowed regularly and the last was left untended. The tree with all competing vegetation sprayed off grew a lot faster (seemed to be twice as fast).
 
In answer to your question Jane, provided that the stone isn't compacted that should be fine.
