What’s This About Real Betis

When we return to Cork every October, our grandchildren, grandnephews nominate which Football jerseys they want. Usually, it’s Man Utd, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG etc divvied out which they ask for in advance. What’s the caper this year? All of them want Real Betis shirts. Away strip only - the mind boggles! Some differentials with long sleeve option.

I get Troy Parrott is the attraction, but Away Long Sleeve Shirt??

I'm not sure, but a poem sprang to mind when I read your post Leper;

Epic
I have lived in important places, times
When great events were decided; who owned
That half a rood of rock, a no-man’s land
Surrounded by our pitchfork-armed claims.
I heard the Duffys shouting ‘Damn your soul!’
And old McCabe stripped to the waist, seen
Step the plot defying blue cast-steel –
‘Here is the march along these iron stones’
That was the year of the Munich bother. Which
Was more important? I inclined
To lose my faith in Ballyrush and Gortin
Till Homer’s ghost came whispering to my mind.
He said: I made the Iliad from such
A local row. Gods make their own importance.

Patrick Kavanagh, 1960

(and yes, I had to look it up)

I’m still trying to understand Patrick Kavanagh’s poem printed in here by @Purple. For the record Herr Kavanagh contributed to some of my difficulties experienced in my grind through secondary school. Only Shakespeare and his love sonnets exceeded P. Kavanagh in my plight. I never could come to terms with poetry. I’m an out and out prose guy.

This evening on the Paseo (mile long protected safe walk by the beaches) I bought four young boy full kits of Real Betis away strips for €18.00 each. I bought three adult away jerseys for €18.00 each too. All had short sleeves.

None had a name or a number inscribed on the back. I thought I got good value and didn’t have to haggle. The cardboard sign indicated each item @ €20.00. I don’t know where the stuff was made or even if child Labour was involved. I was on a little mission and completed it.

I viewed the Real Betis home strip and in front there are green and white stripes with some sponsor’s name. But, the back of the jersey was plain white with no name or number inscribed. It looked pretty bare except for the name of the sponsor and perhaps this is the cause of the away strip being more popular to the Irish eye.

Real Betis have a huge Irish connection.
They won the La Liga title once in 1935 managed by Dubliner Patrick O’Connell who also managed Barcelona and played for Manchester United, there is a large artwork memorialising the La Liga win in a Seville Park.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the presentation of a bust of Mr. O’Connell to the Betis club President on the pitch prior to a game when we were royally entertained after at the game in the President’s box.
Great City for football, heading back in November for a Betis game & hopefully see Troy in action

Real Betis 1 - 0 Real Madrid. Terrific 2nd half. Troy Parrott scores after being introduced. Real Madrid have a goal disallowed late in match. Mbappe misses a later penalty. Excellent end to end stuff in an overheated cauldron in Seville. Mourinho yellow carded for his antics earlier. Good value for my jersey.

Now that I’ve bought the Real Betis away jersey I think I can refer to them as “us.” “We’re” playing Lille in France tomorrow night (Tuesday) in the Champions League. C’mon Troy the Boy and Real Betis.

Betis is looking like a very good choice for Troy over playing Championship with West Ham. Money not as good in Spain, I don’t think, but a great choice by him.
Would like to see Evan Ferguson go back to Europe when fully fit.
And definitely avoid going to Celtic!

Outstanding!!

"With the scores locked at 2-2, the Dubliner latched onto a through ball from Rodrigo Riquelme, made space for himself in the Lille box, before firing a low shot beyond the outstretched leg of Berke Ozer.

Three minutes later, Ethan Mbappe, brother of Real Madrid and France striker Kylian, was sent off for Lille with Betis holding out for victory on their return to the Champions League stage after two decades.
"

From RTE Sport match report.

Now there's a man in form. I mean Troy Lep; in your case it goes without saying. ;)

Gabby Logan on BBC's Euro Match of the Day singled Troy out for special mention tonight talking about his winner at the weekend and they re-ran his winning goal from Tuesday after the match highlights, she even mentioned that he's Irish! The consensus from the panel was that Betis have legs in this year's competition. No mention of the geansaís though. A nice little cameo for them/him

Just an update from a guy who knows almost nothing about Association Football:-
"We" (Real Betis) are sharing 2nd spot with Atletico Madrid (19 pts each) behind Barcelona on 24 pts in La Liga. Last night "we" beat Porto in the Champions League with Troy (although I never met him, now we're already on first name terms, he can call me Lep) starring again. He didn't score I understand Manchester City and PSG played out a just inferior performance in Manchester. I'm getting excellent value for those at away strips I purchased.

Ye, are having a very exciting season alright, Lep , Am I right in saying that , ye, play Barcelona this weekend. It should be an interesting game...

Barcelona travel to Sevilla to play Betis tomorrow (Saturday) to play "us" - KO 5.30pm Irish Time. I hope Troy is playing. It should be interesting. I'll probably visit a local pub to watch it. But, I wouldn't feel comfortable in the jersey while wearing long pants. I have my limits, you know!

This will be the real test for 'ye' . It doesn't come any tougher. Go wear your jersey proudly.....and take the flack.....it will only last until ' ye' score the first goal , hopefully in the last few minutes.
