I have spent a good deal of time researching water softener.

What are the current latest recommendations?

Should I get an approx. €1000 system or a cheaper €500 one?

Household with two adults so not an enormous amount of water used.

Level is quite hard, about 200 mg/L according to the latest tests just done.

Thanks

Hi joe,

search the forum for water softener. Look out for posts by the very knowledgeable zenn.

The real key is in finding a good company in your area and check out everything they offer from price, warranty, qualifications, certifications, service back up, service costs, etc.

Buy from a top end WQA (Water Quality Association) member with Certified Water Specialist training and qualifications, or someone with 5 to 15 years experience in water treatment with a cast iron customer satisfaction list, and you can't go far wrong.

Check out - WQA: wqa.org - and click on "Find A Water Professional".

Select Ireland from the country list and you will see all current Irish members and Certified Water Specialists. Ireland now currently has the highest number of WQA Certified Water Professionals in Europe, with the highest levels of professional certification in Europe.

As for products, the US made systems have always been the most reliable and brands like Clack - the WS1CI systems combine reliability with high specification, build quality and back up at very keen prices.

Taller Clack metered systems for the garage that will be easy to access, service and give 30 to 40 years service, now come in at half the Celtic tiger pricing from 500 to 700 euros supplied and good installers will charge from 850 to 1,100 for the best packages.

The country's best installers are ...

Mark Leenders in Kerry - Aqua Control Ltd

Mike Robson in Dublin - Watersource

Heinrich Leisner in Roscommon - Smart Water Solutions

Hugh Ryan in Kinvara - Hugh Ryan Water Treatment

Google "water softener" or "water softeners" and see what companies are offering and recommending.

For smaller systems on lighter hardness levels, Mike Robson from Watersource in Dublin supplies the best cabinet style Clack water softener brand nationwide, from 450 / 550 euros with options on warranty / installation.

Yes, Mark and his father Xavier installed an Iron+Manganese removal system here and they came back several times "free of charge" until they got it working correctly.

Believe me when I say Mark is one of the most ethical and highly rated installers in the country, and the reason you have a correctly working system on high iron and manganese is because Mark backs up what he does and service systems, where very few other dealers can handle these types of tricky well systems.

Often the fault of a seeping ballcock or other external issue may throw a system out but you can count on Mark to track down the issue and he would often not charge for something really not his fault.

You have a highly regarded, ethical and good firm to work with so don't be too harsh as Mark excells way beyond many operators who would not answer the phone, or go bust or make excuses. Xavier has been in the business in Europe since the 1970's and Mark is the next generation of a long standing and committed firm. You won't find many of them around.

Hi theBiz,

I always recommend water softeners from water2buy.ie
There is no difference is a 500 and 1000 system

(apart from the 500euro! - which a fraction of can go to pay a good plumber)

Any connection with the company?

Specifically in what ways is this company better than the others listed earlier in the thread?

from 2007
They have the best prices in the country and will ship it to you within a few days.

and from 2006:
You can buy them at www.water2buy.ie
Try water2buy.ie

No direct connection as in i don't work for them but i do know the owner.

People are asking for recommendations, I'm just recommending a company that does a good job, a lot of water treatment companies spring up and disappear as you have pointed out these have been here since at least 2006.

Personally i have a water2buy filter system installed.

.... I'm just recommending a company that does a good job,...

Does this company just supply the equipment or does it provide "full service" water treatment solutions like the other companies mentioned?

In other words does it arrange for samples to be taken and analysised by an independant laboratory? And then on foot of the water results does it design, install, commission and service the installation going forward?
