Taking the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead

I've travelled on the ferry several times with the car & family to Holyhead. Loved it ! Such a comfortable way to travel even without any upgraded seats.

After you park your car on the ferry, pay close attention to the level and entry/exit to the upper decks ! There are several stairwells so easy to get mixed up.

We had a really rough crossing only once but it was bad. Kids were vomiting alot ! And I was seriously queasy. I wouldn't go again without some "just in case" travel sickness tablets.

As I said I was 2 for 4 on Swift crossings, make that 2 for 5 after this Saturday. I've just received this text.

Irish Ferries: Apologies. Your 07:35 Dublin Swift sailing on 05/07/2025 is cancelled (weather). You can be accommodated on the 07.45 Ulysses sailing.

Please check-in no later than 30 minutes before departure. If you would like to contact us, please see www.irishferries.com for contact details. See following link also for your options https://www.irishferries.com/sailing-disruptions

Interesting. I would have thought that they would be very busy in July and unlikely to be cancelling it just because they have not enough bookings.

Do they need a really calm sea for the journey.

I wonder if they publish any data on the percentage of journeys cancelled?

There are plenty of white horses on the Irish sea today. The Swift doesn't like them because it travels at about 50km/h. Ulysses on the hand, is slower, but will sail in just about anything, sometimes including storms.

Is it speed or is it the fact that it's a multi-hulled vessel, a catamaran? After years of service as a military transport I'd have thought she'd be up to rough seas even whatever the Irish Sea can throw at her. Wrong ship for the job?
