Yes, we had left wing parties howling for rent control and evictions and our supposedly right wing parties implemented them.Ireland does not - they are the ones who introduced it and tightened it up every time it seemed not to work, so they are incentivised to defend it.
Aligning rent increases to HICP, restricting evictions to immediate family only, the eviction ban, these were all policies originating with Sinn Fein and implemented by the government. Had SF been in power, they would have come up with much the same as the post March rules.
It seems to be group think at this stage. The logic is that tenants must be protected from evil, greedy landlords by stringent rent controls, eviction bans and threats of criminal prosecution and that these will at the same time cause landlords to remain and increase investment in the PRS
