RTÉ - "Ireland should prepare for traditional TV switch-off say ComReg"

If saorview is shutdown will 2RN keep it's expensive network of transmitters to transmit FM radio only
Is not 2RNs purpose for existing to provide the transmitter network? The make good money renting capacity and antenna space on the towers to other companies. Even Denis O'Brien is in the business, owing one of the masts you can see on the 3 Rock.

The future might be if the internet goes, there will be not any communications possible.
The internet is reasonably dispersed though. True there has been a rapid consolidation as the like of Azure and AWS have sucked up vast numbers of services, but I think recent high-profile outages are prompting financials services and others to ensure their footprint offers better resilience.

Some goods points there, no harm having a bit of redundancy in the system. More than once I've seen our fibre and mobile internet go down at the same time.

Must have a look. Dont think my wheel controls integrates with phone
Most recent cars will have it and it can interact with the car's own media player or that on your phone when the phone is connected. I was sceptical at first and rarely used it in my previous car, but it works pretty reliably in my current 2024 model, far easier than navigating the media player or phone touch screens while driving.

That was the original point of it. I think the issue for the Irish public (as opposed to the internet's original military purpose) is the limited number of access point providers.

You press the microphone button on your steering wheel
If you're feeling fancy, either the car or android auto have activation phrases to avoid having to go to the effort of pushing the button. My car's name is Laura, and she is useless compared to talking to android auto. It also makes it annoying to talk about someone called Laura in the car.

Isn't that the case for the alternatives too though? Shut down the provider and all goes dark, and the legacy broadcast channels were more concentrated with little or no redundancy in transmission coverage.

But I was specifically referring to shut down the internet piece. To achieve a full internet shut down now would require a take down of multiple mobile, fixed line, and satellite providers.

I haven't used the Skoda one, on the Hyundai it'll automatically switch from the in-built to the phone assistant when a phone is connected. I just find hitting the button easier than using 'Hey Google'.
