RTÉ - "Ireland should prepare for traditional TV switch-off say ComReg"

Haven't watched RTE tv in years. It was all repeats and dreadfully cheap home produced tripe. Resent paying for it, its like a giant sucking (company spammed askaboutmoney) on life support.I also disliked the left wing view on everything despite it supposedly being neutral.

They only recently switched off Aertel.
It was giving gainful employment to a team of employees. I knew someone who used to run it in the late 90s. It ran on two PCs connected together on a Novell Network. They were probably running the same kit untill it closed down.
You have to remember that RTE is still like the Aer Lingus of old. When David Kennedy ran Aer Lingus he would hear on the radio that they were hiring 150 more employees. Charlie would have declared it so, and he would have to find 150 jobs for them.

Resent paying for it
Fully understand how some people dislike RTE, and might find better entertainment on a variety of streaming services. And if you only ever watch TV as entertainment, that's fine.

But abandoning the principle of independent public service broadcasting to allow the free market provide your options - I think that's a case of "be careful what you wish for". The free market doesn't always have your best interests at heart, and we only need to look across the pond to see the virtual absence of un-biased "news" to evidence this.

A lot will question whether it is independent though. This is the issue that needs to be questioned more . It certainly has a single far left outlook through all its programming.
It's up there with believing everything the Bishop said was correct back in the day.

just don't know how to respond to something like this. It's just so preposterous.
Well everyone including RTE is quick to point out the bias in the USA among the various stations. At least over there it is clear for all to see.
Many people here still live in a church like bubble with what is fed to them.

While I take your point, I would dispute RTE's independence, not to mention if they are genuinely providing quality public service broadcasting.

It's another example of the govt concentrating policy for urban areas where many people don't have aerials especially apartments. At the expense of rural areas.

There were all these predictions that sky would go off the astra satellite platform in 2029 but now I hear they are extending that again.
The current satellites at 28.2°E that cover us reach the end of their life expectancy in 2029/2030, there was talk of replacements but so far no confirmations. The 1Q satellite for 19.2°E was ordered in 2021 and is expected to be in position some time next year.

Freesat are actively campaigning for the regulator to be allowed cease all satellite broadcasting by 2034.
