Hi,

Just want some opinions on working as a quality assurance officer.

I have worked in education for a number of years and recently a different institution has approached me and asked me if i would appply for QA role with them.

I honestly don't know anything about QA but at the same time I'm thinking it is all common sense and being ultra efficient in monitoring tasks/procedures etc.

I don't know what to do and am already freaking out at getting the job and not being able to handle it.

I would be the only QA officer and cant hide any mess-ups and would be 100% answerable to the board if i did!

Anyone any opinions on this?

Which industry?

I've worked in QA in the tech industry. It's a lot more laid back than you'd think :)

There is generally a process to follow, so as long as you follow the process you're grand. Also, there is a good chance you'll just be natually good at the job. I have strong attention to detail and I can be a bit of a perfectionist, so I found the job pretty easy.

As regards being "answerable to the board"... not in the IT industry anyway.

That was the reply i wanted to hear!

It's still in education which i do know well. We'll see what happens shur! Have you a qualification in QA or did you just naturally fall into the role?

I did Computer Science in college and kind of fell into QA...

The most important skills for the job are not technical ones. If I were hiring I'd much prefer to employ people with an interest in messing around with technology, enthusiam for breaking things and attention to detail. All the other things like Oracle and MSSQL and Unix, you can pick them up pretty quickly.

QA is really more of a mentality than a series of technical skills or qualifications.

Most people hate the job... and most people are bad at the job. It's not difficult to stand out in the QA industry.

I also work in Education and have worked in QA in the past.

Is the job in the private or public sector? That would alter the nature of the QA role.

It's a tough job to do. I found it started to consume my life to the point where I was working Saturdays as standard.

QA in relation to education is going to alter somewhat in the next year or so with the new European Framework of Qualifications coming into play. For a lot of 3rd level institutions it will mean that QA proceedures will have to be overhauled.

In some industries the QA engineer is personally liable if breaches of procedure have been covered up.

One can get a certificate in quality assurance in places like waterford I.T., dundalk I.T. and also in letterkenny I.T. AND also in fas. The problem is one has to pass an exam which is a bit tricky. This course is not specific to any industry.

Already 2 more posts ..I am flattered.
I guess I am a bit late with my advice but I know a little about this qualification.
By the way it consists of 2 exam papers leading to a certificate.
In june 2008, 66% of candidates failed part 1,while only 16% of candidates failed part 2. I am considering going for this cert so if anyone has done this course maybe they could give me some advise.
