Where my parents live there are several of the neighbours that are retired and in the process of retiring. Some are not well but of those that are able bodied these are some things they do - note non are paid but are things that keep them busy and interested in society -
Make jewelry, make greeting cards, volunteer in the charity shops in the local town, go to mass and pray for all those that don't, do computer classes and spent several hours practicing. Volunteer in the local hospice and nursing homes and sit with the sick/dying. Book clubs.
My own mum makes jewelry and cards. She would ware the jewelry to town and if someone compliments her on it she offers to sell it to them. She keeps herself ticking over and has made several commissioned pieces. It helps with her arthritis to keep her fingers going and also the brain as she fears losing her marbles. She is excellent at it and will be 71 on Wed.
