Northern Rock bailed out by Bank of England

ive read the entire thread but cant find an answer. Has anyone been into the NR office to withdraw and is it possible for all types of customers.

Im trying to withdraw from my mothers account and only my dad knew the password and he died a few weeks ago. I obviously cant use the online service. I dont want to send a withdrawl letter(it will take too long), no joy with telephone service last week as we'd no password

any ideas anyone?

Trying most of the afternoon - every 10-15 mins and eventually got in. I'm using standard IE v6.0

Got the message to allow 3-4 working days for electronic transfer

IAt a personal level, I can only thank ionapaul and other for raising this on askaboutmoney.com http://www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?t=61592 last month and prompting me to close my account in good time. Looking back at that thread, I'd say there are a few people eating their words right now.

Well, seeing as I started that original thread, here's my story...I delayed taking out ANY money from my Northern Rock account (despite actually printing out the Rabodirect forms during the early part of last week) and added €8k to my account two weeks ago that I had resting in my current account. I tried hundreds of times to get through to the Dublin office via phone on Friday, no joy. Twice I got an un-engaged signal...but no-one picked up either time and it timed out!

I am now blocked out of accessing online after screwing up my 'favourite place' answer three times (I HATE their f**king security questions!) - I need to call them to enable online access again! I am faced with having to struggle through on the phone on Monday, knowing that I will not get through again. On Tuesday I need to be in Dublin airport (I'm in Galway) for 7pm so will probably drive up in the morning and spend my Tuesday queueing outside NR offices in the Harcourt Centre.

My parents are in the same boat as I am, the money they have in NR is something that would be ruinous to lose. Sad to be so easily affected by the panic. I do feel like an idiot worrying about my money last month, posting on AAM and now being completely unable to access it.

hi ionapaul, thanks for the thread starter

do you know anyone who has queued at the office and got their money? Im looking for any info before me and my mother join the queue on Tuesday , what to expect etc. Its better to be prepared than turned away for not having the correct paperwork

I read in one of the papers that on Friday people were queueing for up to 2 hours outside the Dublin office - I assume it was to receive cheques. I imagine all your would need is your account number and valid ID.

I saw an RTE news report from outside the Dublin office, they showed a man saying he was relieved to have just got a cheque from them.

Thanks for the that.

dont mention passwords, its the bane of my life the last few days:(

Snowy you will also need the Bank sort code. You will find this on a cheque book (it's the second number on the bottom) or ring the bank from which the funds were transferred to Northern Rock for it.

It is unlikely you will need to produce the password.

In the meantime, ring them early and often!

And perhaps your password?

Don't know about what happens if calling to the office but when I got thro on the phone I was not asked for password. So if you don't know the password for the account, you may be ok provided you know all other details including nominated account etc.

FYI.

I've been trying since Friday to access my online account.

Up until a few minutes ago I was recieving the same 'sorry for inconvenience etc.' messages as many others.

Thankfully I was finally able to access the system just now and initiate a transfer. Of course, how long this 'queue' we're now in is anyone's guess..

Hi marion , do you mean sort code for the bank we would like to transfer to? I have the NR account number but nothing else

With IE, hitting refresh on the "Unfortunately, the system is currently very busy..Please close this window" screen allowed me logon and do the needful. Thanks for the tip.

Yes. That is what I meant. Where did your mother/father transfer the money from? There must have transferred it from a bank or building society by cheque or by electronic transfer - if it is a demand online account. Have you any documentation from Northern Rock?

snowy: my condolences on the recent death of your dad

Europhile: That's interesting.

I withdrew by phone on Friday, but only because I had been locked out of my account on Thursday night due to repeated attempts to log in.

Consequently, I have no password at the moment and I forgot to request one on Friday.

I did manage to log in today through all the security questions but only to receive a message that a new password would be sent out to me.

While I am here, what is the e-mail address for Northern Rock?

Marion

thanks marion
i dont even think its a demand online account , i think its a regular demand account as he requested money by post in the past.

fingers crossed for tuesday (its the only day i can get off) i am ready and armed with everything now

Has anyone just left their money where it is, having faith that their deposits are safe and the Bank of England is there as a back-up if all else fails?

Yes for one simple reason.
If NR goes bellyup the whole of the English banking system will
collapse, share prices will collapse, interest rates will soar, inflation will soar, there will be a huge run on other banks/building societies and this in turn will lead to some more collapses.
This will be a worldwide problem and not just English.

Things will get worse before they get better but it will be all over in a couple of weeks for NR.
