Jobseekers benefit which is now only available to part time workers will be increased by €10 in 2026.

No mention of any 2026 increase to Pay related Jobseekers Benefit which is the only scheme now available to full time workers.

Is this another example of the unfair treatment of those who get up early and work hard, by the present government ?

Government should not be let increase welfare or pension rates in the future without corresponding increases in the tax free credits and lifting of the tax bands with inflation. There needs to be plenty of pressure on government before next budget and not let them away with what they did this year again. If they say they cannot lift the tax thresholds because of financial constraints well then no increases in welfare either, they can't have it both ways.

All sectors should be treated equally.

Certain welfare recipients got a small increase which in many cases will be cut by up to 50% because of the extra taxation imposed by no tax credits and 20% band increases.

Workers were shafted.

A full time worker who becomes unemployed will lose out on the double.

It seems that their PRJB payment will not be increased to keep pace with inflation and they will pay extra income tax as a result of no increases in credits and 20% tax band.

The €10 increase to the COAP is an increase of less than 3.5% before extra taxation is deducted.

Grocery inflation is now 6.5%.

I know messaging around “a tenner” is simple but I do wish they would simply use a simple % for all working-age and pension increases.

But people don’t only buy groceries.

That’s why inflation is estimated based on a representative basket of goods and services.

Out of interest are people aware back when PRSI was set up first set up benefit was linked to rate of pay if you were out of work and PRSI was capped at average Industrial wage,

A major shift in policy is need to tie changes in tax bands to inflation on an annual basis. This can also be tied to benefits.

Government will need some ability to adjust but any changes should be based off that change rather than a stationary baseline.

No increase to maximum JPRB rates in 2026.

No budget inflation adjustment to tax credits and bands and a kick in the teeth if you become unemployed.
