Michael O'Leary: "Dublin Metrolink - Waste of Money"

That’s what I’m thinking. However given the speed of projects like this the future drivers are probably getting ready to start school this year

We have discussed this before

I thought that there was a more recent discussion as well.

I agree. I don't care how much it costs to build it. Over its lifespan the capital cost will be small.
This is a bit like the National Children's Hospital which will operate for 100 years and over that period the construction cost will amount to about 5% of the total cost. Oh, and the children's hospital is not the most expensive children's hospital in the world, or even in Europe, but that's for a different thread.

As well as the above the Government will just waste the money on pay increases or some other half-baked politically motivated collection of schemes that will achieve very little. Much like the roads and the schools we built during the Celtic Tiger, when the tide goes out we'll still have the Metro and the Hospital.

I looked this up and it seems that it is, in overall terms. (A children’s hospital in Dallas, Texas is said to rank higher in cost per bed, but that's a different metric.)

An underground metro-link to Dublin Airport is a must sooner or later. Everything costs, but when it’s provided it’s there. Inventions are speedier these days and even before the project gets started there will be new inventions which will be prudent annd vital. Other than cost I can’t argue against.Let’s make the cost work.

Many people on here can’t come to terms with driving to/collecting people from the airport and the pick-up/set-down rules (different thread) never mind a metro. Then there’s the brigade who want to live near the airport but don’t want to hear planes flying nearby. Only in Dublin!

The last thing Dublin needs is 400 more buses.

Measured by cost per bed it's the 6th most expensive hospital currently under construction.
Measured by cost per square metre it's the 13th most expensive currently being built.
My either measure it's cheaper than the new children's hospital in Belfast.
details here

The fact remains that the capital cost of major infrastructure is a small fraction of the total cost over its lifetime. That will apply to a Metro system in Dublin.

We're gone off-topic but in terms of money it remains the most expensive children's hospital in the world.

This would remain the case even if there were more beds or more space in it.

We could also build an extension to the Dart line from either Howth Junction, Sutton or Malahide and connect that to the Airport. Again, no need to consider any underground options, it's too expensive and slow to deliver
Good luck with that. There's barely room for the trains that are already using the tracks.

Which is great news; we are getting a very large, very modern Children's Hospital which, measured by meaningful metric, is being built at a competitive price.

Hopefully, after the political gamesmanship and misrepresentation of the facts by much of the media due to political bias, ignorance or laziness, the Metro will prove to be just as cost effective.

and @Dr Strangelove out of curiosity what routes?
All of them.

Drivers used to throw us off buses short of the terminus, switch to drop-off only, etc. Some depots were a law unto themselves.

That’s all gone now with real-time tracking of buses. I have about six ways of getting to work via buses and walking and I can choose the fastest in real time. It’s like night and day.

Also remember this is just for the airport stop, there are still all the other stops to consider.
Well the first sensible thing to do would be to get the dedicated DB 747 & 757 bus back in operation for the holidaymakers and then leave the other buses going through the airport for commuters.

There is no even proper luggage provisions on the buses going through the airport.

Yeah that still happens, if the bus can't make time it's directed to go empty to garage or terminus depending on time / driver breaks etc.
People are still left stranded, from a driver point of view they feel it's worse now more than ever in terms of delivering service.

Where would we get the drivers or the road space from? The capacity of MetroLink is over 6 times that of a bus lane. Even if we did somehow construct 6 bus lanes (which would probably cost just as much as MetroLink), it would still be so slow.

Remember MetroLink will also allow for future development. It could, for example, support a town of say 100,000 north of Swords. This would go some way to solving the housing crisis.
