Interviewer Questions

Having participated at a couple of job interviews recently (as an interviewer) I feel that we could improve on the information we obtain from candidates in relation to their on the job experience.

We ask general questions about work experience etc. However, I feel our interviews could be improved in relation to assessing candidate's relevant experience and how they would use this experience in the job, should they get it.

Any suggestions or links to sources of useful info in this area would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What techniques do you use at present, if any?

Do you have a clear idea of the competencies required for the job and how to assess whether candidates have these qualities?

Have you heard of Behavioural Event Interviewing, for example (an aging, though still popular technique)? Not suggesting that this is the way to go, just wondering if you or your fellow interviewers have developed any particular interviewing skills?

Thanks extopia.

We do have an understanding of the skills required, we could probably do with some improvment in our ability to determine if the candidates have in fact got these skills.

We're not a big company and don't have any HR specialists. I do like the idea of behavioural questions and will try to work some in to future interviews.

List the competencies you want the person to have as a starting point, then base open questions that will glean what experience the candidates have in these competencies. Ask for examples that will show their competency in the areas you want.

There are numerous HR consultants available who would assess the competencies required by your candidates and train you in how to interview them.

Cost probably prohibitive to go this route? Especially if only taking on one person occasionally

Well there are a good few small consultants out there, doesn't have to be Accenture! I think it would possibly be a good investment. But of course you don't go the consultant route, you need to take some training courses. Maybe the IPD can help?

Thanks for the suggestions, I wouldn't completely rule out using a consultant or attending a training course.

Does anyone know of any good online sources of info?

Harvard business review has some good publications on Interviewing and retaining talent. They're available online, not too expensive. Definately worth reading

Thanks for the suggested sources of info.

I've had a look at the selection article on the CIPD site and there are some useful suggesions in it. I particularly like the Joel on Software article, especially the bit about hiring smart people who get things done.

Will check out the Harvard Bus. Rev. articles.
