Hi, I hope theres someone who can help me with this weird scenario... i cant find an answer online anywhere. So any help is much appreciated. I am irish citizen who has lived abroad for the last 7 years and in that time got married and started a family. I had an accountant (who has since retired) file my returns form 11 for rental income gained from renting out my home here and tax was paid at source but i am returning this month and want to file it myself for last year. I set up ROS online and ready to imput the info but im still listed as single. Obviously i will change it to Married. CAn i just put the date of marriage as last year as i cant see the importance of it tbh. They hardly need a marriage cert? I guess only if you want to share credits with husband. But we are now separated so i will chose separate assessment.
I got married abroad and had my children abroad and haven't claimed any credits other then as a single person. so i assume I paid correct amount of tax due ( obviously if im wrong and actually owe money I will pay it)
Like is it really that important /necessary for the tax office to know your every private life event :> ie marrying, divorcing, having children if you arent claiming anything from the state? anyone any experience of this? or know where i stand? Do they even care as long as your not underpaying your tax? I am imaging not.
