Hi, I hope theres someone who can help me with this weird scenario... i cant find an answer online anywhere. So any help is much appreciated. I am irish citizen who has lived abroad for the last 7 years and in that time got married and started a family. I had an accountant (who has since retired) file my returns form 11 for rental income gained from renting out my home here and tax was paid at source but i am returning this month and want to file it myself for last year. I set up ROS online and ready to imput the info but im still listed as single. Obviously i will change it to Married. CAn i just put the date of marriage as last year as i cant see the importance of it tbh. They hardly need a marriage cert? I guess only if you want to share credits with husband. But we are now separated so i will chose separate assessment.

I got married abroad and had my children abroad and haven't claimed any credits other then as a single person. so i assume I paid correct amount of tax due ( obviously if im wrong and actually owe money I will pay it)

Like is it really that important /necessary for the tax office to know your every private life event :> ie marrying, divorcing, having children if you arent claiming anything from the state? anyone any experience of this? or know where i stand? Do they even care as long as your not underpaying your tax? I am imaging not.

I'd just change your status from single to married and leave it at that. I don't consider that the Revenue will be particularly bothered when you got married. One of the questions on a Form 11 now is date of marriage so you may be asked for this in any event. Based on your circumstances you may actually have been overpaying tax (look at the Revenue website on a matter called aggregation relief) but i doubt you were underpaying it.

You will need to send them a message via MyEnquiries to change your marital status.

Hi Paid, is that absolutely necessary? Wouldn't changing it on my form 11 return be enough? as that in itself updates my tax status credits etc sorry to ask.

You have to pro-actively inform Revenue, just changing your tax status on the Form 11 won't really suffice

But we are now separated so i will chose separate assessment.

You cannot opt for separate assessment unless you update your marital status.

I think you would have to supply more information to Revenue, such as when you were married, when you were separated, whether you receive maintenance payments, the country in which your ex is resident, etc.

I read the link. Thank you. but i think that is for persons who only are PAYE and get married. Hence letting them know it beneficial all round. According to the form 11 (online version) once you change your status in ROS it automatically updates you. It warns you before proceeding that this will happen. Therefore i assume no need to be calling them with the same information. Thanks for all the answers everyone!
