Government confirms delay of pension auto-enrolment

Not a hope in hell of meeting a nice round number of Jan 01 2026. In practice, it would need to be ready by the end of Nov 2025 (6 months away) and with December basically being holiday season, there's no way could they fix any issues before Jan01.

While I agree with autoenrollment, this is a mess. From having low fees to adding in a fixed monthly fee that will have a bigger impact on small members. The tax treatment is unnecessarily complex. If you are contributing to a pension already, you are exempt from the scheme...which means you are trading the employer contribution to avail of higher tax relief.

In the UK, they did a gradual roll out, targeting the bigger employers first and then gradually including small companies. Copying what other countries have done isn't a difficult thing to do.

They’ve just advertised for the Chief Executive Officer, National Auto Enrolment Retirement Savings Authority (NAERSA).

Split between Donegal and Dublin.

Did you know that AE was rolled out over SIX years in the UK from 2012 to 2018, with the larger employers being enrolled first?
My understanding is that the plan for Ireland's AE is that 800,000 will be enrolled on Day 1, January 1st 2026.
Anyone applying for that job who promises they can achieve that is a chancer.

From today’s Irish Times (paywalled):

Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary is to update Cabinet on recruitment for the “My Future Fund” organisation, which will manage the auto-enrolment scheme due to go live next year. The recruitment of a board, chief executive and accountant for the body is under way, with the head of the organisation expected to earn in the region of €214,000 annually.

He will also bring an update on the procurement competition to source investment management providers for the scheme.
