Government ban on new petrol and diesel cars pushed back to 2035

Why?
Fossil Fuel companies have a long track record of damaging the environment but that doesn't mean we shouldn't question the data from EV manufacturers. They are no more or less likely to to be economical with the truth.
As long as the status quo is questioned also. But that doesn't seem to be happening.

Also - the same old FUD is being recycled(!) over and over again.

Yep, everything should be open to question but those questions and the answers should be based on data, not dogma.

Travelling Wave Reactors, small reactors and any of the plants being built by the French or Japanese.
Scientific America has reported that Nuclear power has saved a minimum of 1.8 million lives since the 1970's and may save 7 million more. I heard that figure is now 2.4 million but I couldn't find the link.
There are no TWR in construction, so we can forget about that as any sort of medium term goal (given building nuclear is measured in decades rather than years).

Im not convinced any of what France are building are any big advancement on whats already there (and running near 40 years)

No, there was meant to be but Trump stopped it, probably rightly so as it was bring built in China.
I'd far rather see time and money spent on that than on Fusion. There's no technical reason why we couldn't have one up and running in ten years. Unfortunately people are stupid about Nuclear power and fear and ideology has trumped common sense and science.

Ah they are more advanced. They are much safer. Planes are essentially the same as they were 40 years ago but it is 22 times safer to fly now than it was in the 1960's. In fact flying is 19 times safer than driving. The basic technology is the same.

Well the renewables targets keep getting pushed out so nuclear is very much part of the solution. Anyone who thinks we can get to zero carbon by 2050 (even though that is highly unlikely) is not dealing with reality. The global population is still rising maybe going to 10billion people. Its pure fantasy to think that all the energy for that population can be satisfied by windmills and solar panels.
We are going to need all the energy we can get our hands on and fossil fuels will still be very much part of the energy mix even in 2050. This is a multi decade transition, massive investment and infrastructure construction that's not going to happen by arbitrary targets dreamed up by politicians and bureaucrats. Look at housing situation and how difficult that is to tackle, energy is a much more difficult issue than housing

did i say it wasn't? i was asking the poster about what they meant by modern nuclear, which is really same old nuclear.

If we are going to have a power generating nuclear asset in Ireland by 2050 id suggest we would need to be getting serious about it now to be honest.

TWR's are old technology that's never been commercialised but existing Nuclear reactors are very safe and very reliable and unlike wind and solar don't need an additional 40% standby capacity in the form of gas and oil stations for the time the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine. So build lots more Nuclear, duplicate the French supply grid across Europe. We'll continue to get our nuclear power through interconnectors to Britain and the mainland.

I'm not sure if we'll ever have them here as we are small and incompetent when it comes to delivering public projects but any discussion about power has to be had in the broader European context.
