Probably fair to say that the reasons AAM hasn't sunken into the mire are that it's not a commercial venture, there's a meitheal ethos, there's a strong leader, mods are hand picked (?), there are personal biases but you get to know them from using the platform frequently, disrupters are red flagged early and the content is predominately accurate in the sections that it should be.

It was zero to do with the left or the right. One can live with the modding of a money website such as this. Because it's mostly not about opinions. Rather it's about experience and advice. One can not live with the bias of mods on a website such as boards if one is having a discussion of a topical matter. But thankfully one has choices and not all sites are to one's taste.

On our third last move I finally persuaded himself that the VHS tapes off the telly of Live Aid should be dumped. Perhaps we should have donated them to the national library. LOL.

Mostly, but far from exclusively. There's plenty of scope for somewhat subjective opinions in most of the topics posted here. On the other hand, with most financial related topics I guess that opinions can and should be backed up with analysis and justification based on the facts and figures.

That's only because geldof decided to release the full live aid show a decade ago I think in superb quality so it all became available on YouTube. Before that your vhs tapes had value so I'd say that was the reason you dumped the vhs tapes of live aid.
 
On boards what happens it's someone on one side of a discussion will break the forum rules constantly. Like for 50 posts. Then someone on the other side of the discussion posts something similar but perhaps not really breaking the rules they get banned for one post. Nothing subjective about it.

That's what killed their traffic. Also the software was broken to be unusable. They introduced ads that meant the screen would jump around refreshing constantly and buttons were missing. So everyone used add blockers on the site.

It's an interesting comparison in terms of moderation policy. AAM has a MUCH harder moderation policy. For example, this thread, with its beautifully vague thread title, wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes on AAM before being either deleted or at least given a sharp instruction to make the thread title detailed and relevant.

Chat is really not encouraged on AAM. Last time I looked, the chat forums were the same ten people who've been talking to each other there for the last 20 years, largely agreeing with each other's right wing economic views.
 
Boards is an extremely useful tool for a lot of people in Ireland. It has had several big ups and downs and probably overtaken by Reddit etc, but outside of Facebook it’s the only place to find Irish content on pretty niche topics. Whether it’s bargain alerts, which pub is closing down in cork city, or just friendly chat with relatively like minded people. I e previously been a subscriber from 15 years ago, and a mod of a few of the smaller forums and a user for 20+ years on and off. 20 years ago, pre twitter, insta, it was a powerful enough tool.

Funnily enough I recognise a few of the user names in this thread as heavy boards users over the years who obviously have had one of the famous fallings out causing bad blood as many of the mods did with other mods and admins over the years. The mod forums could be very fractious also, especially considering the unrelenting constant full time job some of those forums could be. Politics only really outdone by Soccer forum.
