Hi,

Husband and I are planning a trip to Ikea in the next week or so to buy alot of gear (full kitchen, sofa, chairs etc). We are concerned about the carrying of the stuff, i am pregnant and husband has a bad back. Do you know if the shop assitants will help us to load trolley and a hired van?

Thanks in advance

J

I have seem assistants helping people with leavy and large items but I am not sure that they will follow you around the warehouse filling your trolley for you.

You will also have to consider how you will unload the van when you get home. Possibly collating the codes for all of the items that you want and getting them delivered might make sense.

Thanks ontour. Even to get help with the heavy stuff should see us right.

Re unloading the van, there will be a builder on site and he will help with that.
As far as I know the cost of delivery is £100 for first pallet and £50 for each pallet after that. I'm guessing that our stuff will be at least 3 pallets so its probably as cheap to hire a van and travel up and down. Has anyone else availed of delivery service? Recommended?

Hi - we hired a van/truck (3.5 tonnes) and got our kitchen, utility, wardrobes, couches etc.. no one helped us take anything off the shelves. We did manage to find someone to help us load the van, but we thought we would have about 4 or 5 trollies, but ended up with 15 ! Its a very stressful day but worth it in the end!
best of luck!!

Crikey Qbot - that does sound like a stressful day out!!
Think I'll have to get myself properly psyched for the trip. Hopefully it'll be worth it.

Ikea staff are helpful, but I think you'd be better off bringing an extra person with you to help with the lifting.

I wont lie to you joeo, it was a horrible day... it didnt help that our kitchen planner wasnt uploaded properly and we had to redesign kitchen from scratch. You definitly need 2 people there. We just found a corner of the store to keep pushing our trollies into once we had filled one. The staff are friendly but will not do the work for you.. !! also, credit cards/laser cards only take 100 items so you have do do a few transactions (well we did with our 15 trollies!!).
Best of luck..!

I don't think the stuff you're getting will be too bad. For example, the doors of the kitchen cabinets will be in single packets, ditto the shelves, side panels ,etc. Also, they will be on the floor level, not on the high shelves. You need to make a list before you go up. Then, when you're there, note the reference numbers of each item. They will be on the display in the showrooms. Make a list of how many you want with the same reference number. We spent a good while in the bedroom showroom listing everything for a built-in wardrobe. As we already had the doors we didn't have to get them - they would have been heavy. We checked and double checked our items. It so happened some things we wanted weren't available - if they're not on the floor don't bother asking an attendant if they're in stock - they're not, till another day. We compromised by getting drawers instead of wire baskets, etc. You do need to have a good look in the showrooms before going down to the 'warehouse' because you'll have this big trolley with stuff on it and you can't really go back up to the showrooms in the middle of your searching. Then, when we were finished, we checked our list - and double-checked again, and found we missed something! It is a bit harrassing but worth it if you keep your cool! We did get help in loading the car.

Thanks everyone, some really useful info here!

joanmul did you use the kitchen planner for picking items? Just wondering if the product codes on that are the same as instore (they're different to ones online as far as i know). Presume it would make alot easier if you could just use the itemised list from the planner.

One more question - would it be better to hire a van in Dublin and drive it up and down or to hire a van at Ikea?

Thanks again
J

when you design your kitchen, a kitchen assistant will check your design to ensure you have everything. They will then print off a list of items and double check that for you. Then you go down to the warehouse and pick all the items... on the print off it has the item code, name, location in warehouse and price...

Definitly hire a truck in Dublin.. ours was from national truck rentals in blanchardstown. 300euro for 48hrs.. tues afternoon till thurs afternoon. We used the comp insurance from the car on the truck, just got it transferred over for that time. You can leave your car at the rental place if needs be.

Hope that helps

Brilliant, thanks for all the advice. We're hoping to make the trip this week. Fingers crossed its a productive journey!!

Staff are helpful but like another poster said, wont do work for you. Lifting things off shelves in warehouse is tough work. Went also when I was 5 months pregnant with husband and brother so they did all the hard work.... its a long day, wear comfy shoes !

Definitly agree with di74.. wear VERY comfortable shoes! was so glad I wore my runners that day!
