Anyone care to recommend a carpenter / joiner for a small domestic job ?

I would urge you to put some kind of protective layer on it regardless if it is a nice desk that you put it...even the most gentle users might have highlighter pens, tippex (if that is even still a thing!) and all manner of cosmetics can stain.
