An Post. Postal deliveries gone to the dogs.

But to participate, you need to be objective and not prejudge the outcome.

I'm quite capable of putting my views to one side, participating objectively, and recording the timings and outcomes objectively. Anyway seeing as I was the only one who bothered to pick up on your suggestion its probably moot.

In Dublin 14, postal service has been terrible recently.

Firstly only seems to come once or twice a week, small problem.

But also post is increasingly not going to the right address, last week I got post for 6 different houses. Mistakes happen but on Tuesday we got 5 letters for 4 different addresses in our postbox and on Thursday 4 letters for three different address ( one the same as Tuesday and two new ones, none of them correct).
Makes me worries where our post is going..

This used to happen to us. We ended up doing the postman's job. Then decided to write on the envelopes "delivered to wrong address" and put them back in the postbox. The delivery mistakes stopped after that or maybe the postman went to Specsavers.

Anyone else experiencing similar?
I live in Blackrock and over the years, especially since I've retired I've wondered about our post
Fifteen years ago it was as regular as clockwork, near enough at 9am a our postman would walk by our house
Then about eight years ago he got moved and up until about a year ago it was hit and miss as to whether we'd see a postman or not
and for the last year we've got a new postman and he's hitting our house before 8am whenever there's post. but thats the thing now "whenever"
as we probably only get about 12 regular letters a year now

So to answer your question from my prospective the post seems to be working fine
and I would have no problem if they reduced the Monday to Friday service to one or two days a week given that most letters can be sent by email

My next door neighbour asked me yesterday if I had taken a delivery for her from An Post as she had received a text saying "Delivered" and neither she nor I got it.

I had been tracking the progress of a delivery of an item from Italy.
Yesterday morning it was "out for delivery".
Then when I checked last night it was marked as "delivered" at the exact same time as my neighbour got her text.

This morning the tracking is showing as "Being prepared for delivery".

These are parcels and not letters.

Likely your postie hit the wrong button on their handheld terminal marking parcels as delivered rather than returned to depot.

@Leo
You are dead right.

And I was beginning to wonder if there was a conspiracy to show items delivered so that they meet their targets.

The simpler explanation is always the best.

If I am in when the postman arrives today I will ask him.

Definitely since just before Xmas it is alot slower, I was putting that down to Xmas, but even recent items in the past week or 2 are taking ages. I have items that cleared customs and wasnt picked up by an post for a week.. I got the txt msg from An Post saying the item would be delivered next business day, and it didnt come until 2 days later...

A couple of years ago I was expecting a parcel, I got a notification that the parcel was out for delivery the next day
I woke up to a notice on my phone that it had been delivered but no parcel outside my door
Later on that morning the doorbell rang and the post man was standing there with my parcel
I queried him about the delivery notice to which he replied,
"As I load up my van with parcels that I'm delivering that day I scan them in as delivered"

I posted a letter in the post box on Claremont Road in Dublin 4 on Tuesday. The post is collected at 5.30 pm each weekday. The letter arrived the next day in Dublin 8.

A friend living in Dublin 8 bought a stamp in her local post office on Monday and the post office assistant said she would take the letter so my friend gave her the letter over the counter. It arrived at my house in this morning's post.

I spoke to the postman yesterday and he told me that the regular postman for our area has been sick for 3 days so others are covering and they don't really know the area well.

Today I had a "delivery attempted - no answer at the door" notification on a package. We have two adults working from home today and the doorbell has not rung at any point. This is maybe the 5th time in the last 12 months An Post have done this with parcels. We're in a block of flats but have a functioning buzzer that DPD and Amazon drivers are fully capable of using but the An Post postman never does. I am now in the dance of requesting redelivery and hoping it comes Tuesday or Wednesday, left in our common area without notice.

When this happens to me I go up the the local depot and collect it. It's a 30 minute walk away but rather this than be waiting in suspenders.

Three family members living in different parts of thd country have received Christmas cards in the last 2 days all posted before Christmas. What is going on with an post. Definetly not dependable any more

What posters are describing here is in no way something unusual. The delay in the postal service over the Christmas period is very well known for years. This delay can be excessive in some cases- always has been, always will be.
I used to work in a postal like service abroad some decades ago. Like in An Post todays business, we used cage like metal containers with wheels. Every day we got a certain number of those containers and we had a certain amount of time to look after the contents until the next load of containers arrived. Sometimes the amount of arriving containers grew substantially without warning- but the amount of staff was not enough to deal with the workload. So arriving containers were transferred into different halls on the company compound to get them out of the way to make room for the next load. Those containers were sometimes parked for a considerable number of days because we kept dealing with the never ending stream of newly incoming containers. When the number of incoming containers finally went down and we achieved to get things under control again, we dealt with the containers which had been parked somewhere else.
It is the same with An Post today. Some amount of mail always ends up being stored when the amount of mail is getting to much to deal with.
