2021 statement of liability received out of the blue

It takes forever but I got answers eventually via MyEnquiries. You really have to be able to calculate it yourself though, I later had the underpayment offset with unclaimed tax relief on health insurance and they mis calculated it but corrected it when I pointed it out and sent them my calcs in excel. It was immaterial but because I had worked it out I was able to check their workings and wanted to make sure I got my correct refund.

But I can now see my version of the SOL from 2022 (when I made my return) and the one supplied to me this week, with this 'U/P coded' being the only difference*.
That seems very odd. The statement of liabilities should contain all relevant information to explain the bottom line and, specifically, why the original and updated SOLs differ.

@rob oyle - did you hear back anything from Revenue yet? I eventually put in my own query a few weeks back but no reply to date.
Your timing is impeccable. I literally received a response to my query in the last hour. But it has prompted a reply as it doesn't clarify anything. It simply states 'Of the original underpayment for 2021 of €xxx, €xxx now remains, and needs to be repaid.'
In my case the outstanding payment is half of the 2021 liability issued at the time of my Form 12 submission in 2022. However, what is also included in that Statement of Liability is that the liability would be 'Collected by reducing your credits in future years €xxx 2023; €xxx 2024; €xxx 2025; €xxx 2026. All future refunds will be automatically offset against this underpayment until it is fully collected.'

My understanding was that this liability recovery was being made equally in each of the tax years 2023-2026, which should mean I have an outstanding balance of one-quarter of the original amount but that would be collected through 2026. The revised liability issue by Revenue is for half of the original balance.

Ha! I just received a new SOL for 2024 after a pension contribution I made a few weeks back, so clearly someone is doing some work over in Rev today :) I think it's exactly the same situation as you, now - the figure represents half of a legitimate underpayment (although, not my fault!) I've being AFAIK paying back since 2023, with the final quarter to be collected next year. The quarter from *this* year certainly appears on all my various SOLs for 2025, so I'm at a loss as to where that missing quarter has come from. But I at least know now what it originally stems from...

Keep an eye on this. I had 2 different underpayments. Which prompted me to do some claims i had not done over the same periods to offset. Seemingly the u/p is manually entered and whoever did it did it incorrectly. I was able to calculate the correct amount on a spreadsheet and send via My Enquiries. They agreed with my calculation and updated it correctly. But had i not, i would have been over charged tax.

I got a balancing statement out of the blue for a so called underpayment in 2019 related to a social welfare payment that my wife was supposed to have received. This happened in 2024.

I checked in to this with social welfare. I was right and they were wrong. They just issued new figures in letter form to me.

I wrote to the Revenue with new figures. In fact I had three sets of figures with different figures relating to social welfare payments in 2019.

I have never heard anything back from the Revenue about my so called underpayment. I am however paying this underpayment at the moment that has been spread out over three years.

I wasted days on this. Lots of letters to social welfare to sort out the problem. Months waiting for replies. Then presented my case to the Revenue......completely ignored.

I am not sure that I have the energy to go in to another round with the Revenue.

I am only talking about €300. I am not sure if it is worth the fight......considering I am having a similar battle with Ryanair at the moment.

Updating this thread in case someone comes across this issue on their own file... given two AAM users have seen the same thing happen, there is likely to be more.

Revenue have responded to say that 'After reviewing your taxes, it appears that two coded underpayments for 2021 were cancelled on 31/08/2022. Consequently these payments were not materialised. The payments amounted to €xxx.xx each, or €yyy.yy in total which is the balance remaining for 2021.'
However, when I look at my statement of liability for 2023 and 2022, the 2023 underpayment (i.e. reduction in credits) is exactly this amount, and my tax credit cert for 2023 (issued December 2022) has the same reduction in credits, and this occurred after this supposed cancellation. My 2022 tax credit reduction is actually higher than the 2023 amount, but I assume this includes a liability reclaim by Revenue for another period. It's not possible to see this.

So I'm going back to Revenue about this again to see if they can say for what periods these payments didn't materialise.
