Move to Cork (from Dublin)

Cork is not a huge city but it is a great one! Blackpool is an area just north of the city and is a short walk to the city centre. Is it primary or secondary schools that you are looking at? More than one school required? Hard to know where to suggest without knowing more about the circumstances but you will have a lot of choice. Could consider Glanmire - excellent schools and a short drive from Blackpool. Take a look at daft to give you an idea of the cost of rentals - remember that many landlords will consider reducing the rent for good tenants so no harm in asking if you are happy with a particular place.

It's a new job, with better money, but will you be happy and will you be leaving family back in Dublin, childminders friends etc?.....only asking because it could be a lot of upheavel in your life if you move down, miss family in Dublin and have to move back.

Lucky you, you get to move to de Real capital of Ireland!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't recommend Blackpool or many of the areas in the city around it, realistically Glanmire is pretty good, and on the road to Dublin. Anywhere out towards Mallow could be a suitable commute as well. Bear in mind a large chunk of the new motorway from Dublin to Cork has already been built and the rest should be done in a year or so

Hi poorme,

Lots to think about but I think Cork is a great city & people are so friendly,at least in my experience going there as a visitor since living there a few years back;-)

Cork is quite small alright, a lot easier to get around for the most part than Dublin by car. As for Public transport, you need to be patient as service is nowhere near as good, everyone drives !

Ok reputations in Cork are long-lived. Blackpool has had a bad one for a very long time. Recently it has had a make-over and the development there has seen improvements. Some people have moved in there in apartments renting but to live in houses would be rare unless family connected there IMO.

Now I would look on www.da*t.ie & check on google maps for distance from a house to work for your husband & schools etc.

I know a few areas in Cork but Northside I think is easier to get around than busy southside with traffic etc and from outside city.

just think about what ye like, do ye like living in a city or outside a bit with countryside but less facilities about so a drive of 10 mins at least to services.

Good luck !

Fantastic houses around Luke's Cross, Montenotte; good gardens with the larger ones or newer ones, parking situation varies, city centre walkable; close to good secondary schools (boys and girls), mostly fee-paying though, walkable to Blackpool and not too bad for getting on the Dublin road.

I have No Bias towards Cork

The Question is ... Where will your Husband be Based to work? That should influence your choice of living location. The North side /South side of the city is better comments would be similar to Dubin comments.

Glanmire if fine, but bear in mind it is a commuter suburb. Towns within reasonable commuting time to the City are Ballincollig (almost joined to City) Mallow, Midleton (A town I very much like despite being from the city and now I am living again closer to the city).

Douglas & Rochestown are popular areas to live in for "Professional" types as you may see on Daft.ie Houses advertised as "Would Suit Professionals"

Budget would also be a factor. I see on Daft that houses in Rochestown which peaked at €480k last Spring now being sold at €360k for 3 bed semi’s.

Better Areas should be easier to Sell when/ if you decide to leave Cork. You can Pick up 3 bed semi’s in Mallow for €250k which peaked at €300k, but there has been a lot of new developments in Mallow, A lot still empty, So when you decide to sell there would be a lot of competing properties for buyers to choose from.

The south side of Cork city is perceived to be nicer than the north side. But if you are looking to rent you could consider somewhere a bit out in the sticks and you could find rents at 700 a month for a 3 bed house which is very reasonable. Some of the small villages like Watergrasshill have grown a lot in recent years since they are near the motorway.

lots of areas mentioned there poorme, chiefly outside city in county, so you'll need a whole w/e to visit them & see what you'd like.

also commuting times can vary for some of these places mentioned as nearly an hour at peak times which is a lot for Cork but traffic is busy these years in Cork. Mind you I know plans are in force for a train service from Midleton to Cork, also is one from Cobh to Cork and all stops en route too. Also a similar service to Luas in the city in the future, so check it out.

Places I like are Togher, Northside and near Blarney, Cork, a good easy commute to city. Montenotte as said is a good easy commute to city too.

Douglas is now known as a traffic nightmare. Coming from West Cork can be troublesome with traffic at peak times all along from the roundabouts on outskirts of city, pass the main University hospital etc.

I didn't like Ballincollig in the past but have heard people like it there so may be worth checking out. On other side of city, Glanmire has some beautiful houses.

In this time of investment in purchase, good links that don't take forever to city would be key !

If ye are originally from Dublin then I would suggest that he flies up and down - there's far to many dubs here as it stands besides adding more

working in Blackpool - i wouldn't live close myself thats not to say its terrible.
How about Blarney - the commute would be fine on the back road! other options of St Lukes as above are good too. Glanmire is a good bit out too.

Lol its all of use or none.
Not a chance of him leaving me here all week days with these 4 nutters.
Whole idea is less hours more money.More time with kids.
Six more dubs on the way.
I think.

Thanks pennypitstop ill check Blarney also.
Glanmire has some beautiful house i must say.
Looked at Rochestown nice also.
Just to add i need a 4 bed.
Thanks again.

Glad you have a sense of humour!.... Seriously though .... if based in blackpool then coming up from Glanmire/East Cork direction can be a nightmare sometimes. Blarney, Faranree, Parklands areas would be more suited.

Are you sure as you can be that the job is secure...maybe it is with the Revenue Commissioners? Not nosely but i know many people who changed to a so called better job with bad outcome

you know dewdrop has a point, well before economy was on shakes Cork were losing jobs. Def check security first.

If you're willing to travel up to half an hour as you say and would prefer the sticks, then somewhere like Ovens wouldn't be a bad choice. There are very good primary and secondary schools 5 mins away in Ballincollig and you're right on the Ballincollig by-pass which is now 120km/hr and links straight to the tunnel and Dublin road (fair enough you have the south link in between but timing will avoid most traffic here) The southside is a disaster for traffic, be very careful about what area of the Northside you might go for.

Go for Montenotte or Saint Lukes great location. lovely views over the city from alot of houses. Nice schools close by, can walk into town, or work and lots of big period houses, not as expensive as you might think either because corconians are all hung up with living in Douglas with its terrible traffic and annoying teenagers.
