Updating AVG Anti-Virus

Having received a prompt that the AVG Anti-Virus Database being out-of-date, I followed the instructions. However, after many attempts of downloading/installing 2 or 3 different software versions (Anti-Virus), (Antiv-Virus and Firewall) I deleted from Desktop the surplus icons containing those downlaoded files which didn't work, leaving the original AVG icon alone. However, after each attempt of updating by selecting "Desktop" for "Folder", I was informed that:
"No new update file could be found at the selected location".
Then I tried again, selecting "Internet", and was told:
"An error occurred when trying to connect to the server. The server name cannot be converted to the IP address." The advice was "Go to Update Manager component -> Settings'.
However, I could not find that ....! Tried to go to www.grisoft.com and start over again, but still in the same loop - was told to update.

Any ideas?
Thanks, allendog

Why are you selecting this option rather than update from web or whatever it's called in AVG? If you have deleted downloaded updates then using the local update option makes no sense.

If you cannot browse to the website then there is something more fundamental wrong than just a problem with AVG. Can you access any site (you could be accessing AAM from another PC I suppose)?

Download the latest version, delete the current version from your PC, install and update.

Avg, I dont think that is much good. My Friend had that on her pc and had awful trouble with it.. it didnt have a fire wall protection on it to start and when she went to update it throught that site grisoft, it made the pc stall, and nothing would work. In Fact in the end she got rid of the whole thing and got Nortons... So Good luck with it! hope it works for you!

I've used AVG Free for several years on several different PCs/laptops and the only problem that I ever had was the odd intermittent problem with downloading updates due to Grisoft server outages/load problems. It has also caught the odd virus for me. I have no complaints with it generally and would recommend it to people. I'm [broken link removed].

Agree completely - I switched to AVG after using Symantic/Norton for a while. I have never had any problems with it other than that mentioned by Clubman.

hi,

I had the same problem yesterday.

Tried to download it many times, but it always told me I had already the latest Version. still had the out of date message. Really annoyed me.

Until I realised that the date on my pc was wrong. Something had set the date incorrectly to january 2007, and I have no idea what it was. when I reset the date, the alarm went away.

Maybe check what date your pc is currently running on.

Have to say i've been using AVG free for a number of years as well and considering it's free, i can't complain. Would recommend it highly.

Hi, all.
Was away this weekend - thanks for all your replies. Have found the cause of the problem - it was Norton Firewall that needs turning off, which I did so, and once the latest version of AVGFree 7.5 is installed and Internet connection made, the Norton Firewall is then turned on.
Thanks for your help - interesting to hear your opinions on AVG, etc.
Cheers,

Interesting. Would have thought it somewhat of overkill to have Norton and AVG on the one PC. I thought I read somewhere that it was not a good idea to have two anti-virus products running at the same time as it can cause conflicts. Also, what is the point of paying for Norton when AVG is free??

I recently installed AVG and uninstalled Norton as it was conflicting with Firefox following a failed update. After a month of troubleshooting, I realised that Norton was the problem and disabling it allowed Firefox to run normally, so I got rid of Norton. Bloomin' bloatware...

I think it may be a bad idea to have more than one virus scanner doing live on access checking but there's often no harm in having more than one installed and doing manual scans with each. On the other hand I too have read of problems with certain combinations of scanners even if only one was doing live checking but I'm not sure what the state of play is these days. Probably best to read the release notes/manual of each virus scanner before installing more than one.
so I got rid of Norton. Bloomin' bloatware...
Agree totally!

tallpaul,
good point. Norton was already pre-installed when I obtained the laptop. As for 'overkill', it's quite confusing as to whether it's necessary to have, as well for anti-virus, software for anti-spam, anti-adware, anti-spyware and anti- ...... !? For the moment, my laptop's protected against virus and spyware (Ewido). As for spam, I use Yahoo.ie for email for the past several months and never, ever received a single spam email from the start, yet when I was with Eircom, my mailbox got clogged with spam mail, and for that reason, had disconnected from Eircom last year.
Did anyone using Yahoo ever receive spam email?

Yes - it can be confusing. For what it's worth I run ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG. I also have a bunch of other things installed for on demand or periodic scanning/cleaning- namely Windows Defender, Ad-aware, CCleaner, ewido, Microsoft Baseline Security Advisor, Spybot, SpywareBlaster. I've never really figured out how to configure my D-Link DI-524's firewall properly but it's on my TODO list!

Norton is a real pest. asked dell not to pre-install any anti-virus yet it shipped with bloddy norton! it was fine for a while but then a few norton upgrades later my computer was grinding to a halt. have avg now and its flying again

had to uninstall norton too. avg no problems. using kerio personal firewall and ad-aware, though those viagra adds are getting through on my emails. dont open them so I dont know where they are coming from. obviously someone has gotten a hold of my email address. then again maybe some day in the future I might need them  .........

dont open them so I dont know where they are coming from.
With some email clients (e.g. Outlook Express) you can download and view the raw source of the message to see the headers in case they are of any use in tracing spam without actually opening the email and allowing active content (e.g. Javascript, ActiveX some HTML etc.) to report your address back to spammers as a live hit. There are probably also utilities for doing the same thing. However possibly not of any real use other than if you are just curious.
