    David Bowie

Am I the only person who thinks that the whole David Bowie weepathon is overdone? He was only a singer after all!

    UK driving (and sleeping)

If you are going into Holyhead, then there is a great stopover place on Anglesey called Lastra Farm. We used it going to Ireland and also on the return. We had booked the Fastcat in both directions, but on the return leg it was cancelled and we had to use the ferry which obviously put us into...

    Travelling to Australia

We flew into Brisbane a good few years ago so things may have changed. We stopped off in Bangkok on the way down and Singapore on the way back which broke up the journey nicely. Remember not to carry any fruit etc into Australia as it will cause you problems with customs.

Are my children entitled to dental treatment in NI

Dear Margaret, I assume that by "Southern Ireland" you mean the Republic of Ireland. You may be interested to know that the Northernmost point of the island of Ireland is in the republic; or in your terms, Southern Ireland.

We have a separate shower as well as a bath in the bathroom. Shower every morning, maybe have a bath once a week. Bath is better if I want to read a book while soaking!

    Cost of Replacing Gas Fire

Bit late now, but I'd have got several quotes for supply and fit. The only other thing you can do is get a quote from a qualified gas fitter. If it's only connecting to an existing supply pipe and flue it shouldn't be more than about £50. Get several quotes, I should have said!

Reason you wont be protesting on the 10th December

Clean water is expensive to treat and deliver; surely it is reasonable for the consumer to pay for it. I should point out that I live in England, was employed in the water industry for many years and paid the appropriate charges. I am still paying now that I'm retired.

    Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Agree re Singapore, but Bangkok should also be considered. We did Singapore on the way down to Oz and Bangkok on the way back. Best of both worlds. Singapore, incidentally, is the cleanest city I have ever visited. Everywhere spotless. The people are far more honest than most people in the far...

    Size of Joists?

As far as the ground floor is concerned, given that the joists will be supported by the concrete subfloor, then you don't need major timber in there. Id have thought that 3" X 2" timbers would be OK. As far as the ceiling is concerned, are you lowering the ceiling to give more headroom in the...

The phrase that riles me is "I'll try and do that." It should read "I'll try to do that."

    August Wedding Invitation to Florence

Nothing to say about where you stay, but an absolute must is to climb to the top of the cathedral dome. It's a bit of a slog, but well worth looking at the views of Florence. Brunelleschi's dome is a brilliant piece of construction. The Ponte Vechia, which can been seen from the dome is well...

    I should 'of'...

Goes back hundreds of years to when in the majority of houses had only the ground as a floor. i.e. no timber or tiles.

Nice location overnight - an hour from Dublin

Agree with Steiner re the Johnstown House Hotel, IF it's the Marriott where we have stayed on three occassions. K Club Far too expensive for a poor oul pensioner like me, but as I have a cousin living within a half mile I don't need to spend my hard earned pension on accommodation.

Great Hotel Nr Athlone Plus others

Recently back home in England from a trip over for a family wedding. Wedding was held at the Brackencourt Hotel in Balbriggan. Far too much food after the wedding (very nice for mass catering). We are both getting too old for the late night which followed, and gave in at about 01.00...

    Funeral Arrangements Advice (for me!)

My sister's husband died recently after a long illness. He was cremated and the service was humanist. It was very moving; some of his poems were read, anyone who wanted to say anything was able to do so, and his favourite music was played.

Storing bananas so as to prevent them ripening quickly

I only eat green bananas, so I only buy them a few at a time, store them in the fridge and they usually last three days. I worked in Trinidad for a couple of years and all the Trinis I knew only ate them green (straight of the tree) so I got the habit there.
