Can I raise FFL level ?

No the condition was to move the house forward - we moved the house forward (closer to road) which was up a slope i.e. the site slopes down from the road. The ground level was 1m higher from the original location to the new location so the engineer changed the FFL to be a meter higher...

Digital Camera - Basic, Easy, Cheap

Hi, Can anyone recommend a digital camera for non-techy elderly couple. I need a basic easy to use model that is also fairly reasonable (max 200Euro). They currently spend a fortune on disposables for bad quality pics. It also needs to be hardy/durable as its liable to get dropped a lot...

    Insulation beads & cavity size

Fair enough, this BER thing had me confused. I think my engineer needs to do a bit more in this regard. Last Q, Would it be better for (a) full fill cavity block (150MM) using bonded bead insulation OR (B) full fill cavity block (100MM) using bonded bead insulation PLUS dry-lined external...

    Insulation beads & cavity size

Thanks Syd. Are you a fan of the beads in the cavity block walls on new builds ? I am also going to dry line external walls. Is it true you have to agree your insulation etc with a BER specialist before starting a new build ? CY1

    Roof angle

I rang a roofer and he reckons 25 degrees is fine for slates and tiles. There are certain things that need to be done (more overlap on slates etc) but that its no problem.

    Roof angle

Hi, What implications does the roof angle have on a new 2 story build ? We want an angle of 30+ degrees but may have to make do with 25 degrees. I suppose there will be less room in the attic for tanks etc Is there an insulation/drainage issue ? Rain will drain more slowly on a lower angle and...

Pitch of roof & Height of ceiling ?

already got planning. this is a final condition. we have a large site. do we not have to build the foundation from the FFL (56.4m above sea level) on the planning application ? never thought of digging down to gain the extra space. is that allowed ?

Pitch of roof & Height of ceiling ?

Two story self-build. we may have to reduce ceiling height to 2.4m and pitch to 25-30 degrees to comply with condition on house height. just wondering where we can save...

Cavity Wall - Timber Frame - old school

Fair enough but I thought the number of one-off houses being built as timber frame outnumber the brick&block cavity at the moment. Just my perception from reading these message boards.

Cavity Wall - Timber Frame - old school

Hi, I have read a lot about building timber framed houses and it seems the way forward in terms of insulation etc. A friend of mine is building and I recommended timber frame to him - he was interested until he found out his builder, engineer and plumber had built their own homes in past 2...

A few questions about becoming an accountant

Hi Obella, Do big 4 firms take in 'mature' student/trainees too ? Say 35+ ? Would it be a better idea to do 1 or 2 levels of the Accounting exams (e.g. ACCA, ACA, CPA) and then join a training form or is this allowed ? At least then you would know if you like Accounting and prospective...

    House Knock - Salvage

My friend is knocking an old house in order to rebuild and he is going to throw a lot of stuff into a skip that I think would be worth money - am I wrong : 1) Loads of old copper piping - I heard copper was very expensive these days 2) A fairly new (?) water heater/immersion - In good...
