I am a in the public sector and am a member of theSingle Pension scheme.

I also have a PRSA AVC through Zurich.

Each year I make regular quaterly contributions and then I usually make a one off contrintion in December.

Zurich always provide me with PRSA 2 AVC certificate with regards my one off contribtion but for my regular contribution I dont get a similar document and when asked they said they cant provide one. Is this correct? what should I use when claaiming my tax relief? To clarify none of the payments are through payroll and all tax relief needs to be claimed reterospectively

You should have received a PRSA certificate for the regular quarterly contributions when these were started. This certificate is still valid until there is a change to the quarterly contributions. Revenue will continue to use the original certificate.

I just got my updated tax credits for 2026 and the ones for my AVC are not on it, I thought it would carry over but I guess I have to add them every year even though they already have the zurich cert from the first time?

I always claimed for my pension contributions after the end of each year, so I am not certain if Revenue automatically reapply the credits each year.

You can resubmit using the same regular contributions certificate.
You could add a note to say they are continuing on for future years.

Maybe this might work.

@messyleo

This seems to imply that you need to submitt the AVC data each tax year.

"PAYE Employee: Through logging into ‘MyAccount’:
Steps as follows for current tax year:

• Click on ‘Manage your tax 2025’
• Select ‘Add new credits’
• Select ‘Your Job’ – Select Pension type i.e. Additional
Voluntary Contribution (AVC), Personal Retirement
Savings Account (PRSA), Retirement Annuity Contract
(personal Pension)
• You may wish to complete any other reliefs /credit here.
Then Click ‘Next’.
• You will be required to complete details of payment and
estimate of earnings for current year (2025)
Once completed, the tax credits will be populated on screen
(at equivalent of 20% income tax relief) and where tax relief
due at 40%, the additional 20% will be allocated as an increase
in the standard rate cut off point."

I always claimed for my pension contributions after the end of each year,
I agree, surely it makes more sense to do that lump sum contribution perhaps in January... for the previous tax year.

That way you can work out exactly how much tax relief you were still entitled to in the previous tax year and claim every cent of it.

You might not have that information in December and every year you could be leaving unclaimed tax relief on the table.

Wouldn't it make more sense to make a lump sum in January for the current tax year so you have a whole year extra invested in the market?

I always make a lump sum in February for the current tax year to coincide with my annual bonus period.

Make the lump sum when you have the cash to do it, don't worry about tax credits they will update and amend over/under payments of tax anyway with a balancing statement or next time to submit health expenses etc

You can claim based on your expected earnings for the year. If it was too little you can claim the remainder until 31st October the following year.
