My 11 year old mentioned wanting to go onto the web page YouTube. I know nothing about this site and told him he could not view it until I found out whether it is suitable for him or not. Have McAfee installed on system. What is the story with this web page. Did search on AAM but nothing about suitability for children on it.

Check out the below page which gives details on it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtube

Basically any Joe Soap can upload their own videos and they vary in range to home films, sporting events etc

There can be some material which would not be suitable for children

Depends what they want to look at so Parent Supervision may be required

YouTube is basically a repository for videos which you can search for and download. As pointed out above they can be home videos, sports events, and so on , but obviously they can also be violent, pornographic, racist and every other undesirable term you can think of. A lot of the stuff there is funny, entertaining and 100% harmless.

But the question you have to ask yourself is whether you would let your child loose in a video store *which does not have the benfit of age-rating at a minimum* and not check what they watch ?

Try searching on a few keywords yourself and seeing whether you trust the content. YouTube do try to remove offensive content, but there can be a gap between what you consider offensive and what they consider offensive.

It can be fun and interesting, but I would be wary of unfettered access by children and I would definitely discourage (through education) them from uploading content to the site.

I let my 10 yr old look at it, as far as i know they dont allow porn on it, and the violence is rarely worse than Americans funnies home videos.

Yeah, the great thing about YouTube is there isn't any porn. Also, anything deemed to be dodgy (violence, risque etc) can only be viewed by registered users.

As with any site children should be supervised with respect to their internet usage. I have seen stuff on YouTube that might be considered risqué and I didn't have to register/login (e.g. explicitly violent Jihadi videos, football hooligan videos, music videos with somewhat adult content etc.).

Which is free and open to anyone.

Clubman is right...supervision is vital. Anyway, if the kid is 11 he'd probably buy and sell most adults on the old interweb. Of course there's unsuitable material on YouTube but as websites go it's pretty well run.

One other thing, she may be asking to post up videos of herself and her friends which is a whole other ball game... I'm not sure I'd want any child of mine posting videos of themselves up on the net.

If you try and view a clip that youtube have deemed unsuitable, it won't let you view it until you log in and click on a confirmation that you are accepting that what you are about to watch may not be suitable for all viewers.
The decapitation of Saddam Hussein was free to watch to all with a youtube account. In general most of the stuff is harmless but there is still some stuff there that an 11 yr old might be too young for.

See my post above. I have viewed several pretty explicit clips without having to register/login. One recent one was a 30 minute video of Iraqi snipers at work. Basically a snuff movie which I managed to watch about a minute of before realising what it was and feeling nauseous. (It was linked from a news site which did not make clear what the content was).

i would supervise access.... simply for teh fact that you might not be able to view a certain movie without registering, but you will still be able to see the thumbnail of it and the caption.

I sometimes browse it to find funny videos/clips for my kids to watch but I bookmark them and then show them to them later when I know it's all OK and the advertised clips around it are OK too.
